Assigning tags to user categories
Hello, I am very new to the Calibre experience, so this might be novice question. I have created a couple of user categories, and I would like to know if it is possible to assign a tag to a category in such a way that any sub-categories/items inside will have this tag apply to them.
I am a prolific fanfiction reader, so I have set up a category for just that, and inside it, I set up a sub-category listing particular genre's. I would like so that clicking a genre item inside the fanfiction category will only show books with the fanfiction tag and genre tag, etc. |

If I understand you correctly, you want clicking on a sub-category to search for all books having *all* of the items in the sub-category, where today you get books with *any* of the items in the sub-category. If I have it right, then there isn't a way to do this with user categories. Searching on a category is always an 'or' search.
However, you can do it with saved searches. Construct the search you want (the tag browser & shift key can make this simpler), then save it under some name. Saved searches can be hierarchical, so you can control the name space. |

Not particularly like that, I mean that if I click an item (like a Romance tag) inside a user category named Fanfiction, I want to have it so it filters by Romance and Fanfiction tags. And if I click on a different item (Suspense tag, etc) inside the Fanfiction category, it will filter by Suspense and Fanfiction tags. I think it would be more visually appealing instead of having a list of saved searches for each genre.
]Fanfiction (Tag 'Fanfiction' added to all child items) -]Genre --]Romance tag (If clicking this, add Romance tag to Fanfiction tag in search) --]Suspense tag (tags:"=Suspense" and tags:"=Fanfiction") If it isn't currently possible, but might be able to be in the future, then I think it would be a neat idea to have ![]() |

To understand: it seems that your idea requires that the name of the user category (and subcategories?) also be tag? Then a search for anything in the user category would result in the search "name_of_category and thing_clicked_on".
Wouldn't a hierarchical tag "Fanfiction.Genre.Romance" work? |

Actually control/shift with 'Match All' works wonders for what I want. Thanks for your replies. I will try to use the saved search as I get more familiar with Calibre.
