Some problems with new (refurbed) reader - what to do?

I got my new (refurbished) Sony 350 about a month ago, and it's been having some problems right from go. This is my first e-reader, so I'm not sure if these issues are normal, if there are fixes available, or if I should return it.

When attempting to open some lists of books (through books or collections), or some books, the screen flashes white for about 5 seconds, and then I get a screen with a big Reader logo and a message that it's "opening book..." and then after a few seconds it goes back to the home page. Also, the "continue reading" book at the top goes back to Pride and Prejudice, which was preloaded and which I haven't looked at in weeks.

Does anyone know why this would be happening, or if there's anything I can do to fix it?

Sounds like a damaged ebook-file. Try to find out if it's always the same file leading to an error when you try to to open it. Delete this book and go on using your reader. In my case this solves comparable symptoms.

Hi,

your reader crashes when accessing those book-lists and is simply starting up again.

Reasons (among others)
A) corrupted cache-files (cache.xml; cache-ext.xml)
B) corrupted / malformated book-files
C) corrupted IM (InternalMemory)

This could also be related to the way, you sideload books to your reader.
e.g. drag 'n drop, with Sony Software or with Calibre.
For 2 and 3 it is necessary to "eject" the reader properly.

Suggestion:
Backup your books,
- run CHKDSK (if under Windows) on IM ('READER')
- delete all cache-files (attention you will lose your notes and reading-history)
or better format IM from Settings (info will be lost, too)

Copy your books back, but do it in small portions, lets say per 10.
Disconnect after every portion and let the reader scan the new books.

This way you would be able to narrow it down to the "bad" file(s)

HTH

Hi chasethecat,

Welcome to this forum. I have also recently purchased a PRS-350 as my first e-reader as well. I hope that your problems have already been resolved. If not, I would suggest the following:

1) Did you use drag-&-drop to copy books to your 350 or through software? I use drag-&-drop on my 350 and I simply put all files in "media\books". I previously put the books in folders and subfolders in "media\books" on the 350 which caused page-turning really sluggish. Once I remove all the subfolders on the 350 then it just loaded and turned pages smoothly. Not sure if it is related to your problem.

2) Could the problem be your e-book files as suggested by other members here? I would suggest you to go to the "E-Books" forum here (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebo...&sort=dateline) and just download a few e-books there and try it on your e-reader.

If your problem persists, let us know what files you have downloaded and I can try them on my PRS-350.

If those e-books work on your 350, then the problem would more likely be your own files and not the e-reader then.

Hope it helps and enjoy your reading!

Thanks to everyone for your advice, I really appreciate it!

I deleted all of the books, ran CHKDSK and reformatted the internal memory, and am reloading slowly (via Calibre, making sure to disconnect correctly), to make sure I'll know if any of the books cause issues; hopefully this will get rid of my problems!
