Do you upgrade your e-reader when the next gen comes out?
I bought a SONY PRS-500 on ebay in 2009 and, while the bezel is a little dinged up, I'm still using it. With the prices out there for the basic Kindles and Nooks, I've been getting itchy to upgrade, even though they don't really do anything that my Sony doesn't.
I was just wondering if you hand onto your devices for as long as they'll last or you upgrade to the latest and greatest whenever the next generation of hardware comes out. |

I need a really serious reason to upgrade. On my Irex reader the screen had blemishes in various spots and it starts to get turn dark when I touch it with the Wacom pen. But I didn't want to go back to 6" and didn't trust Onyx. Pocketbook doesn't use Pearl screens, so I went with the special price DXG, even though I miss the pen functionality.

i'm a use it until it dies/breaks person. unless theres a massive upgrade i find unnecessary upgrading a waste of money. incremental improvements aren't good enough.

I don't have the money for just because upgrades. I buy the best (for me) that's out there and keep it until it breaks.

I upgraded my Kindle 2 to a Kindle Keyboard in June 2010. Not planning on upgrading anytime soon.

Regarding ebook readers, the Sony I have now is, I feel, absolutely perfect for me and my needs. Until it breaks or turns to dust, I'm using it. When the day comes that it no longer works, I will be very, very sad. ![]() Last edited by banjobama; 01-14-2012 at 04:01 AM. |

I choose "upgrate when there is a serious advantage".
I actually only upgrated 1 time from my "Bebook Mini" to the "Sony PRS T1". I went from: no Wifi to Wifi / no dictionary to dictionary / no Pearl screen to Pearl screen / no Touch screen to Touch screen and many more things. That feld like a big upgrade to me. I don't think there will be a reader out that feels like just as big of an upgrade from my PRS T1 for quite some time. So I don't expect to upgrade for a couple of years. |

We are one of the first irex users. In the meantime a lot of new readers came out. Do we upgrade? No, not yet. The irex is a great reader and it does exactly what we expected it will do. So even if I'm a big gadget fan, I see no reason for a upgrade. We even got still a new one left, just in case. we just read and we read a lot.

I'll stick with my devices till they die. I had a good reason to buy the Sony, while I already had an e-ink device way back when. My mother bought one and I needed to be able to help her if she had problems with it!
Seriously, though. My Sony is for home use mostly, my Mini goes with me everywhere I go. So, they have their own purpose. I wouldn't replace my Mini with a new one as long as it works, nor my Sony. |

I've been reading my Kindle3 every day for a year now. I thought about upgrading to the new Kindle without a keyboard, but I didn't think about it too much. Kindle3 is occassionally still good for wikipedia searches over wifi.

I generally use my devices until they fall apart (and I take care that they don't). On the other hand I am very curious and would like to try out every new device (but not neccessarily interested in owning them all). So I'm glad that I've found different "use cases" for my different readers depending on screen size and file format.

I've had my Kobo Touch for just about a month and an half and it's my first one (I regret just not to have bought a ereader earlier), so it's difficult to imagine a new one just now... But one of my other hobbies is photography where hardware turns are so swift that just the moment you receive your camera, it's already outdated, as I have a (too) limited amount of money to spend for my own little pleasures, I stick to the one I have until I have money and feel the urge for a new one, to say, the new one is not for tomorrow nor even next month

I am not interested in the cutting edge. In fact, for some devices I wish the manufacturers would quit discontinuing models. I'd love to buy the DSLR I bought two years ago new right now. Can't do it, though.
I bought a new Kindle Basic because I live in dread of the Kindle moving to the movie-watching/game-playing device and leaving people who just wnat to read books with inferior devices...for reading books. I like buttons, too. Buttons make sense. |

I will upgrade when I see a clear advantage in doing so. I loved my PRS-505 dearly, but when a better product arrived (the 650) I upgraded and never looked back. I don't like the new PRS-T1 anywhere near as much as my 650, so I haven't bothered.
