Read Kindle books on Entourage reader side?
Hi all, got a Pocket Edge for my birthday back in August, have upgraded to the latest versions and all with no problem. For the record, I asked for the PE knowing full well that Entourage was bust and that this forum would be my support; I'm moderately tech savvy and can fumble my way through most desktop or laptop issues, hardware or software, but for some reason tablets just confound me.
My issue is that I can't figure out how to do one of the things that I was most looking forward to with the PE, namely get some durn books on it! I downloaded the Amazon Kindle app thinking I'd be able to read those books on the reader side too, but of course they want to read on the power-hogging tablet side. Is there a way to bring these books over to the reader side? Oh, and if it isn't presuming too much, my second issue is that I want to publish most of my online recipes to the reader side as well, but I can't do that without having to copy the whole web page, meaning I get lots of extra text to wander through before I can get to my recipe. Is there a way to only publish selected text to the reader, or do I have to edit my recipes down elsewhere and then save them to the Pocket Edge before publishing them? Thanks all! This is a great resource! -Sim Mayor |

Hi Sim! Welcome to (posting on) the forum!
![]() I am intrigued by your second question. I can't think of a good way right now, but there may be one . . . ![]() Your first question is easier: Take a look at Javese's LCD2eink program. I think that will allow you to read Kindle books on the eink side. Another option is to convert the books using Calibre and Apprentice Alf's plugin (google for info, it involves removing the DRM and is ethically questionable so instructions are not allowed in MobileRead). I do occasionally read books in the Kindle app on the LCD side -- it doesn't seem to me to be all that power-draining. I guess it just depends on how long you'll be away from an electrical outlet. ![]() |

Filark has answered your first question, I will try and answer your second.
By 'publish' I assume you want to make an e-book based on the recipes in your web pages. First, if you have a local copy of the web pages it should be a simple matter of opening the pages in an editor and extracting the text of the recipes to a file, you can also extract any pictures you may have with them as jpeg format files - give them names that you can recognise. Having got the text in a file open it in Libre Office and do any necessary formatting - adding pictures and headings etc. Save the composite file in ODF format. Next, go to the 'Writer2epub' forum and download the writer2epub extension for openoffice and Libreoffice and install it in Libre Office. You can then use that to produce an ePub book which you can open in the reader of your PE. You may not be happy with the results unless you took a lot of time in producing the odf file in Libre Office. Don't despair, help is at hand. Go to the 'Sigil' forum on this site and download it, you can then use it to make a professional looking ePub book. If they are all your recipes you might like to make the ePub available to others via the e-books section of this site. Here ends the mini 'make your ePub'. Of course, if you are making a collection of recipes from the net you won't have local copies of the web pages but you can still do 'copy and paste' of selected text and 'save as' for pictures from the web pages in your browser, then follow the above with the exception of making the ePub publicly available. |

Or you can also use Nook instead. Then it's possible to read on the eink side without converting.

Nook books downloaded to the device via the Nook android app can then be opened on the e-ink side.

Took me a little longer to get back here than I had hoped, but WOW! Thanks all for the assistance, especially IvanJT for the detailed epub writeup. Gonna have a weekend free pretty soon, so I might just put some time into the recipe book; not all original, but I can probably put together the non-copyrighted ones into an ebook (as Nick Nolte once said, you haven't lived until you've had my tacos!).
