Looking for a new series

So I'm just about to finish the Foreigner Series by C. J. Cherryh and I'm looking for a new series to read. I really like the one man alone in an alien society and first(early) contact type novels. I like the way the main character reacts and thinks about the new society realizing that his customs and norms don't necessarily apply and the natives reactions to his otherwise normal behavior.

Other examples of books I've read that kinda fit the above theme: Human Memoirs by Greg Howell, Decision at Doona by Anne McCaffrey, Icerigger by Alan Dean Foster and Firekeeper by Jane Lindskold.

Have you read the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs? Kinda like what you're describing and there's a movie coming out in a couple months.

I had seen a novel in that series apparently while looking for something new to read but didn't realize that it was a series and not a single novel. I'll have to look into that one.

I'm still open to other suggestions though, Would be nice to get a backlog of these kind of books so I can keep myself busy.

It's not a series and may not be exactly what you want in other respects either, but The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks is a great book. Have a look at the link for a synopsis and if you read and like it the rest of Banks' books set in the "Culture Universe" are no-brainers, as are those which aren't.

I highly recommend The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, a great first contact novel. Not a series, but it does have a sequel, Children of God (which I haven't read yet myself).

I'm reading The Sparrow right now, it's good. Other great first contact novels are The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin and The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven. There is a sequel to Mote and Darkness is part of the Hainish series.

I found The Sparrow simultaneously excellent and annoying. The character arcs and examination of the human condition were excellent. The aliens were... irritatingly vague. We were barely given a physical description of them, much less a deep and insightful view of their culture and economy.

(Also, it's very sad, so readers who like happy endings should watch out.)

Timothy Zahn's Conqueror's Saga describes humanity's first encounter with an alien race and the tragic misunderstandings that can occur when two different kinds of biology interact.

And of course there's Dune.

Robert Asprin's "Thieves World" series might interest you.

The Player of Games sounds very interesting, not only strange cultures but lots of thinking, definitely putting that on my reading list.

Hmmm I'm not a big fan on sad endings, last thing I want is to feel sad when I finish reading a book so I think I'll have to pass on Sparrow.

The Conqueror's Series seems interesting though I can't seem to find the 3rd book in ebook format anywhere. I might still end up checking out the first two books anyways.

Synamon, Can't believe I missed that book by Larry Niven, I'll definitely be adding that and its sequels to my reading list.

I'm not sure Theives world is a series that I'm going to be interested in at the moment. However I have read similar books in the past and enjoyed them so I'll definitely keep this one in mind.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Several great sounding series to check out. This should be able to keep me busy for a good while.
