I see this in my books every once in a while - what are they for? *

Probably a footnote asterisk. Just like the blue numbers. At this stage, those are not linked in the Kobo reader, only in third party readers like Aldiko.

I'll have to try opening the book in Aldiko and see what happens - although, I first noticed them in a Steven King book that I bought through Chapters/Kobo ???
