capacity of nook classic vs STR (titles vs memory)
This is not theoretical because I have over 800 ebooks on my B&N account.
I would like to try the Simple Touch Reader, but my research says it can hold ~ 1000 books while the nook classic can hold ~ 1,500 with SD card. I'm getting close to 900 books now and have noticed some hits in performance, particularly in loading my library. I have archived a fair number of these books. What I need to know is will the STR handle a library with ~ 1,500 books as long as at least 500 of the books remain archived, or is it a matter of actual number of titles that the library software has trouble managing? It looks like I may have to eventually manage my library through sideloading & removing books, which kind of defeats the purpose of having wifi. I don't have anything on my nook but the default screensavers/wallpaper and books. No music or anything. Thoughts? |

I had over 3,000 ebooks on an external card on my Nook Classic, and often had problems with the Library program being unable to display all the books, and often, when it did work, it was only after it took hours to perform the rescan. I've never had that problem with the Nook Touch. The Library program shows everything within a minute or so after rebooting. The Nook Classic has one file partition where downloaded books and sideloaded books are located, and in the Nook Touch, it's two separate file partitions, and you can't see the books downloaded from wifi when you connect your Nook Touch to your computer. I don't know how to tell how full the wifi download partition is, either.

Do those books have to be sideloaded or can you just put in the memory card and it can handle a bigger B&N library?
I have problems only on the B&N library side of my nook classic; the performance of the sideloaded docs is just fine (I also have about half as many books there). |

I can archive hundreds of them; can it handle more than that many *titles*? Just because something isn't downloaded doesn't mean the library software doesn't have to handle it as an entity.

I just got a Nook ST after my Nook Classic died. I have 1598 titles in my library -- I've downloaded only a couple of those to read so far. When I check the device memory, it shows 237MB free of 240MB.
Hope this helps! |

As someone already mentioned, the Nook has a 750 MB partition for downloaded content. Unfortunately, there is currently no scheme to allow additional items to overflow to the rest of the internal memory or to an installed microSD. The latter would come in handy.
Not that I can image needing access to more than ~1000 titles at once. Though I can see how it's not so much having access to your entire library, but that one title you want right now and it's not accessible. Haven't run into that problem yet, but I'm sure some day... |

You are mixing internal and media storage. Your 1598 titles, if downloaded, would go to the internal storage and you would still have 237 MB free. Only sideloaded content uses those 240MB of storage.

Thanks for pointing that out. I use a microSD card for my sideloaded books, so I wasn't thinking of any of the device's memory for that purpose. Oops!

My memory usage on my nook is fine since I checked it and it is using 580.25 mg/1.26 (44%). I'm not seriously concerned about memory usage since I can always archive more items.
However, whatever database software is running the nook has to deal with all the titles in my B&N library each time it updates the library, as *metadata about* archived items is still there (whether displayed or not) although the book content is not (as I can hide/unhide them). Does the nook software have trouble handling more than 1500 METADATA items? My husband runs into similar problems in iTunes because he has so many tracks, even though he has plenty of *storage memory*--it doesn't run efficiently. |

900 is not a large number, I would expect B&N to have tested the library with far more than 900 books - but I can't help you further as I don't have anywhere near that many myself. |
