Wish the T1 wasnt android......

It didnt need to be. Seriously its only an ereader. Linux was fine. Android based devices are know for their random restarts and freezes. Looks like the T1 is no exception.

Android is really a framework and GUI on top of Linux. Sony was paying for a framework and GUI on top of Linux already (and spending more than they would on Android).

Sony has one big reason for going Android for the T1: They are also supporting tablets with reader software now as well. Being able to share programmers between the two (as well as more code) is a benefit rather than having to deal with multiple GUI layers.

The problem is that it feels like the switch was a bit rushed in order to make it in time for the holiday season. Too much porting work with not enough time, and having to push the device out on a schedule rather than when it is done. But who knows what the effect of missing this holiday season in the face of the Nook STR and new Kindle devices would have been. Rock and a hard spot.

Don't blame the platform please, my Android phone (Galaxy S) works just fine, never crashed, never froze.

As for T1, most likely the effort was underestimated, which lead to a rushed release.

The question is, how often will Sony update the T1's firmware?

Honestly I think it is blown out of proportion on these forums since there a many threads about the same problem.

I've never had a crash/freeze at all -- the widespread problem (that needs to be fixed by Sony) is that when using swipe to turn pages, you will randomly get a "fast page turn" followed by touch screen being unresponsive for a minute or two.

As others have said, the only thing it has to do with Android is that it is new for Sony and as a result the software is not "mature" as the previous software that was used on numerous devices.

Looking at the latest news T1 is already open. When released it should mean we won't be tied down to the normal shoddy Sony updates. And thats purely thanks to the fact that its an Android device

"Normal shoddy Sony updates", what are you referring to? Their previous ereaders were relatively solid from the get go and didn't require updates.

I don't remember referring to Reader updates? I clearly stated 'Sony updates'. If you've not had problems with them before then I suggest you click HERE

Just had the courier deliver my T1, had a quick go through it, really nice device, seems a lot bigger than the 650 but maybe that's just me. Will have to wait till I'm home before I can have a proper play.

My Sony T1 and Kindle Fire have never suffered from the problems Tony1988 claims. Well at least during the time I've owned them.
I did have the page turning problem on the T1 now and then but the latest "fix" seems to have fixed that problem.
My KFire has not had a single problem or glitch. I have Amazon "unapproved" apps on it and sideload some books that are "Sony DRM'd" but read fine with Mantano.

it's not android thats the problem as reported early.. many hundreds of thousands of phones run android with np.. its the company normaly for example htc are particularly bad with updates. sony just needs to iron out the bugs, it will come in time.
