KOBO E-Book Question
Hi - I'm new to this forum and e-readers in general, having purchased a PRS-T1 2 days ago. So far I've only downloaded books from my local library and one book from the Sony Reader store using a free coupon they sent me.
My question is, can I buy from the KOBO ebook store and use it on the Sony device? If so, do I save the book to my Sony Reader software or do I use something else? Thanks in advance for helping a newbie out. |

As long as there is an ePub option at the Kobo store you can get the book there. Most books do have an ePub option.
If it has DRM you need an Adobe account and you can use either Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) or Sony's software to hanle the books. |

I have purchased many books from Kobo. You can download them to your computer and then transfer them via USB to your T1. Or, you can also go to the Kobo website on the T1 web browser and download books from your account library direct to your T1. No cables needed.

I didn't know you can purchase Kobo books on a Sony ereaders. I would prefer a Sony (besides my iPad ). So you purchase/download them on the computer and connect with USB to your ereaders device? Am not familiar how it works with ereaders devices, iPad makes it so easy
![]() They told me at Staples you can only get books from Kobo with a Kobo reader, and Amazon books only with a Kindle. iPad let's you purchase books from all stores. Someone can explain to me a bit more? At Best Buy they didn't know if you can purchase books from other stores than Sony ebook store. Last edited by bcgirl; 12-18-2011 at 03:34 PM. |

Oh yes, not only can you buy them anywhere you want to, you can also borrow from libraries! As long as they are ePub or some other supposrted format you are fine.

Sony readers (and most everything else aside from Kindle) support Adobe Adept DRM (commonly referred to as Adobe or ADE DRM).
Google Books and the Sony ebook store use Adobe DRM. Most independent ebook stores also offer their ebooks in Adobe DRM variant. I believe Kobo uses a proprietary DRM for books you download directly to a Kobo reader but the Kobo ebook store also makes their ebooks available in Adobe DRM (which you can download using your computer). As long as the ebook store has their ebooks available with Adobe DRM, you should be able to read it on your Sony and on the many other readers that support Adobe DRM (Kobo, B&N Nook, iRiver Story, etc). Barnes and Noble has their own DRM (based on your name and credit card number) which has been included in the latest version of Adobe RMSDK. Just not sure what devices (aside from the Nook) support it, but theoretically, support for B&N DRM can be added through a firmware update. Kindle books can only be read with Kindles or via Kindle apps or through the Kindle Cloud Reader. iBooks can only be read on iOS devices. Not sure if you can now read them via iTunes. Or you could strip the DRM which is so far possible with Kindle (old format, Mobi), Barnes & Noble and Sony eBooks and others (most or all Adobe DRM-epubs). And if a conversion is needed you can do that with calibre. I have bought books from Thalia, Libri, Libreka (Germany), Sony eBook-Store (US), Barnes & Noble, Waterstone (UK, until they where not allowed to sell ebooks to Germany), WHSmith (until now, they switched to Kobo) and Amazon. All for my Sony, first for the PRS-505, now for the PRS-T1.

That's because most of these guys know nothing about anything they sell. Do your own research on the web. Do NOT rely on them for any relevant information on anything you want to buy. Know the info before you walk through the door. They only care about the sale. |
