Question PDF viewing compared to 650

Someone just told me that the 950 is superior to the 650 with PDF viewing. I thought they have the same software though. I can't imagine that 1" makes that much of a difference in viewing.

Am I missing something?

My experience is the 6" 505 versus 7" 900 & 950. I find that the extra inch allows me to fit in Small font the entire page on the screen. That same page on my 505 would not fit and would text reflow onto the next page which can mess up the appearance of the formatting on your screen. If you read in larger font sizes then perhaps it is less of a concern to you.

To be honest, my PDFs are usually in column format, so it never reflows right on the PRS 600. I have to use the zoom feature. I wonder if the 650 and 950 resolve this...

For two-column PDF's, the Sony x50 series has a quadrant feature (upper left - lower left - upper right - lower right, each as a sequential "page"), no reflow needed, the small print is fine for viewing.

The journal I primarily read is three column. lol. I hope that's not an issue. *grin*

No problem -- there's a 3-column split feature, too - upper left, lower left, upper middle, lower middle,
upper right, and lower right.

Now that I like. I going to assume that the 950 isn't really superior in PDF reading but that it just gives an added amount of space which could be nice.

Bare in mind that even with the 2-column and 3-column views, it is not uncommon to have an image break where it is not completely viewable on a single screen. And images which occupy multiple columns are definitely not viewable in the entirety. PDFs with mostly text in 2 or 3 columns are easy to read in the 2-column and 3-column views, but when they have images it becomes problematic.

Honestly, I think the 950 would suit you better if much of your reading is PDF. It has one feature the 650 doesn't that actually might be nice (depending on the font) -- a single-column page can be viewed in landscape as a split screen: left = top, right = bottom.

If you are mostly reading multicolumn then there probably is less difference 650 vs 950. The new multi-quadrant view mode is really nice and makes it easier to read PDFs even with its limitations.

Thanks folks. I almost had time to check out the 950 today, but it seemed that my wife felt relieving the baby sitter was more important. *sighs* I guess I shall stop by Best Buy on Sunday when we are about. I will bring my memory stick with books and PDFs to test.

To get at the multi-column split features, you click the button with the little magnifying glass (next to Options), and then Page Mode. If you have single-column PDF's to use, try them with Margin Cut (on small to maintain formatting) as well, to see if you feel that makes a difference. I'm currently reading an Epub where using that on small works better than medium (too big).

Good luck, and we'll be interested to see how you do!

I've got both 650 and 950. Both are great and I use them interchangeably. But the added height of the screen on the 950 makes it a really great device for reading PDFs. The text that looks to small on the 650, looks perfectly fine on the 950. Also it’s good idea to remove white margins in a software like Adobe Acrobat.

With 950 you can (after cutting margins using adobe acrobat or free alternatives) read complex A4/Letter PDFs in practically 1:1 scaling without straining your eyes.
