Mobipocket Reader software crash

I'm hoping I'm in the right place with this as there doesn't seem to be a "Software" forum for Mobipocket. I'm having problems and I'm desperately hoping the knowledgeable people here can help.

I'm running Mobipocket Desktop 6.2 on a Dell Latitude touchscreen laptop with Windows 7 (64 bit). For the past 8 months Reader has been operating without a glitch on my machine. On Oct 4/10 it stopped working. I had opened a book in reader but when I closed out I remembered that I wanted to check something in another book. I double-clicked the title in Windows Explorer and got the equivalent of the following error (this error was from earlier today):

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: reader.exe
Application Version: 0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 48368e32
Fault Module Name: reader.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 48368e32
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000fa7d2
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
Locale ID: 4105
Additional Information 1: 0a9e
Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

I have run Trend Micro Titanium security, which found no dangerous/malicious anything on my machine. Registry Mechanic has found and fixed registry errors which made no difference to Reader. I have rolled Reader back to a restore point prior to the APPCRASH. I have rolled my laptop back to a restore point prior to the event. I have set my DEP so that Reader is allowed full memory access. I have uninstalled, rebooted, and re-installed Reader. None of these have fixed the problem to the point that I can open reader - I'm still getting the same error other than the timestamps. Please help, I'm beyond frustrated that can't access any of my books.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated,
Kristen.

I don't know if this will work, but MobiPocket only uses one ebook directory. So, first remove the two ebooks that were involved in the original incident (from the MobiPocket target directory) and also the associated .mbp files (these may be hidden by default, but they are there).

If that does not work, rename the entire directory (folder) to something else. So that MobiPocket starts up with no ebooks in its library. You can move the ebooks back into the new Mobipocket directory once the Reader is working again. You need to move back the .mbp files as well if you have bookmarks or want to remember the existing last page read, or have edited the metadata from within the Reader (otherwise not).

I don't know what the default folder is called under Windows 7, it is something like My Documents\My ebooks or My Documents\My ebooks\Mobipocket in XP.

I think you're my hero! I removed all 4 associated files for each title (I pulled the image files too just to be on the safe side - PNG & JPEG) and like a miracle Reader opens again.
I'll start over with the originals from the publisher and see if it happens all over again.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Originals from the publisher are working the way they're supposed to. It looks like one or both of the books had become corrupted and when Reader scanned the library at start-up it would crash when it encountered the corrupt file(s).
In case you're wondering, the folder is still called "My eBooks" in Windows 7, Vista too. It's just a bit of an ugly folder tree to find it (C:\Users\"USERNAME"\My Documents\My eBooks) and that's assuming you don't get lost in the somewhat inconvenient "Libraries" folder instead. Can you tell I'm not a big fan of Windows Explorer versions that have been released since XP?

Thank-you so much. I have to admit that I've been a bit of a lurker here for several months now, and I've gotten quite the education on digital literature and all the ways to read it and move it.
The sense of community here is amazing and everyone is willing to share their knowledge and experiences. It's helped me a lot getting my Libre up and running. I wish I'd known about MobileRead when I was setting up my Palm TX to read ebooks.

Hello

Hi,

I am in the middle of a computer problem but at some point I will return and introduce myself properly. You know how these instances can really ruin one's tenor and in fact, day, and I really want to have time to properly and without sounding perlexed and frustrated say hello and meet everyone.

I imagine most people are preparing for a holiday of one kind or another so I do hope whatever it is you believe and celebrate, Have a wonderrful holiday! Personally, we are getting ready for the Days of Light - Hannukah - but we also volunteer on Christmas day if others in our professions are working that day. Granted, we are both in a sense self employed but I work in medicine and academic work so can be on call. We also have a tradition here in the Jewish community of staffing the "soup kitchens" and other places on that Day so revered by so many so the usual volunteers or few employed people (though often they are operated from Churches) can celebrate Christmas. I do think actually it does represent the meaning of Christmas very well and we aways enjoy our day there. This does not of course preclude us from helping out at other times either! It's just that usually on Dec. 25 in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the3se efforts are typucally run by the very small Jewish community. After all, Jesus was Jewish - I think he'd approve.

Have a great day!! And an ever more happy holiday!!!

Hi again,

Now my problem. I usually know quite a bit about computers but like Icendra, my MobiBooks program crashed when I attempted to open a book on a Windows 7 Dell desktop. (I have it on other mobile devices and laptops but I have never encountered any problems at all with MobiBooks until now!). I thought it was merely a glitch and it did open again sans problem. I even read a book in the interim. I tried another book - both bought from the same location so I do not know if there was an error in that downloading since it is a reputable company - and it too crashed! I did not see any message informing me there was an error which was curious in itself.

I must admit I do not often read a book on a Desktop - I tend to either copy them for a tablet or older PDA and read them that way. I even convert them to .lit files so I can read them on MSLit which I have become used to over about 10 years now. (since its inception) However, today - after trying to open a book I knew was fine, all I recieved for my effort was an icon pinned to the Taskbar though I could see a very small screen if I clicked on the program and Explorer and a few other icons blinked as I did so. I must say the computer was on overnight ( I do not like to turn it off too much, sparing my hard drive).

I think what really irks me was this was a book I was checkimng to see if it was ther one I wanted to add to a collection to add to another device! I did not use System Restore or even restart the computer but I did rename the folder and add a new one and when I opened the program again, was met with the message of where I could find book and another that I had no books in my library - something I obviously knew. <g> Arrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Alas, it did the same thing and I am back to square one.

Does this sound similar? I don't know if I have time today to fix the entire program and may "just" covert the files I want to either pdf, word or lit. However, despite the fact we often like what we know and aqre comfortable using (in my case, MSLit) , I have come to like MobiBooks and also how it allows me to convert epub books easily.

Any advice? Thanks in advance and again, happy holdays!

MobiBook works again

Hi,

I just wanted you to know I deleted the eBooks folder including ALL of the books I had thus read and were included in the eBooks folder. Then I rebooted the computer. Voila, it works again and I am happy. I hope it lasts. I just think t6his is quirky software - anyone know whaqt language it was programmed in? Thx!
