Buying used nook Simple Touch, what to look for?
Hi! I'm trying to save some money, and I found someone selling a used nook Simple Touch for $70. I've never used a nook before (can't buy them in Canada), and I don't really know what all I need to check on it, to make sure I'm not being scammed. Obviously, I'll look for a cracked screen or obvious physical damage, and I'll bring SD with me to make sure the card slot works, but I'm not too sure what other things I should check before I pay the guy. Are there any 'gotcha's that you guys are aware of that I should look out for? I'd hate to pay $70 for a lemon and have to pay another $99 to get a working unit!

Several people on the B&N forum have received a stolen one, when buying used. Those are blacklisted at B&N, and cannot be registered. Also make sure that the previous owner deregistered the Nook using the option on the device. If the owner just resets the device, it will still be registered at B&N, and you will not be able to register. And it is very difficult to get B&N to solve this. |

Good to know...thanks for that! I'm meeting the guy in person...how can I check for this? Just try to register it and see if it goes through? Does it even matter if it won't register...I'm taking it back to Canada, and I plan to root it and use it for sideloaded content exclusively, do I even need B&N registration for that?

The best check would be to create an B&N account before you meet the guy, and meet somewhere with Wifi access so can you can indeed try to register it to your account. |

How does not registering the device effect battery life?
I doubt the SD card would be broken. Just go to a place with wi-fi and register it there. Download a free book to make sure it loads. Other than that,... hope the battery life works. |

The guy didn't show up, so it ended up being a moot point. Went into Wal-mart and bought a new one, and couldn't be happier. It's a nice little product!

Congratulations! It's well worth the $99 it costs!
