Newbie - Calibre Transfer

Just bought a kindle for family member and put two books on it. On birthday I intend to give kindle to family member, set up an Amazon account for them in their name and 'transfer' the kindle ownership to them so they can buy and put books on the kindle in their own name. I have played with Calibre and intend to install it on their pc so I can keep a backup of their books on Calibre for them (I have remote control of their pc). Two questions if I may ..... the current books on the kindle are 'under' my name - when I transfer the kindle to them will there be a problem with the books DRM wise - will they be readable by the new owner? Also - in my playing with Calibre I understand how to transfer books from Calibre to the kindle but in my case I will have an 'empty' Calibre on the pc and two books on the kindle. Can I (how?) transfer from the kindle to Calibre?

I think the books will remain in your account and thus not be readable by the new owner, but I'm not sure about that. Stripping DRM (google Apprentice Alf) is a good idea anyway.

To import the books on the Kindle into Calibre connect the Kindle to the PC and choose the Device View in Calibre. Select the books you want to add and right click -> Add Books to Library.

Thank you. I believe there is a DRM stripping plugin for Calibre - if I install this on Calibre and transfer the books to Calibre as you said and then transfer them back to the kindle will they be OK/readable? I'm not sure if I have to do anything to activate/run the plugin - I will google that bit.

Yes, they will be readable after you have done that.

I'm new to this and having trouble with the DRM plugin for Calibra and what to do next. From what I understand (probably wrong!) Kindle early books were in a format called Mobi whereas the new books have a format called azw (my two books are *.azw). I've downloaded what I think is the DRM plugin for Calibra and it is installed under Preferences/Plugins/File Type Plugins. The plugin is called K4PC, K4Mac, kindle Mobi and Topaz DeDRM(0.3.8) by DiapDealer, etc. I just clicked on Customise Plugin and it asked me for the 10 character PID - I did this and the number has appeared at the bottom of the plugin description. I'm in the dark here so not sure if this is the right plugin and/or what to do next. I need to give Kindle to father-in-law soon and re-register it in his name but there are two books on it (bought as presents) loaded under my name. I think, I need to remove the DRM of these two books before I re-register it to my father-in-laws name.

I am afraid that any discussion of DRM is against MobileRead forum policies. You will need to ask this sort of question at the location where you obtained the plugin.

Hi

I have recently purchased myself a kindle 4 and wish to use some ebooks I already have which I was previously reading on my PC, the kindle supports the formats and can be read but once on the kind the information such as title, author etc is all over the place and doesn't tie up with books I've bought from the amazon store, so I've tryed editing the metadata with calibre and on scrren the layout looks perfect and exactly how I want it, but then when transfered to the kindle both via calibre or manual copy and paste, the information hasn't changed and on the kindle the info is still a mess,

Has anyone got a suggestion or solution to this problem?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Send to Device (which I assume you used to transfer them from within Calibre) should update the metadata in the sent copy of the book to that in the Calibre database, but it will not touch the original in your library. To be sure that file itself is updated, you could do a conversion to Mobi in Calibre (even if the original file is already a mobi).

That should fix it, but to be honest, Send to Device should have worked.

You may need to Restart the K4 (not just a simple power cycle
Menu Settings then Menu Restart

add book from Kindle to Calbre

Hi. I just downloaded Calibre on my computer today and I'm trying to add the items on my Kindle to my Calibre Library but I don't really know what I'm doing wrong. I plugged my Kindle into my computer so the device shows up in calibre. I know how to click on the Device button to get the list of books I have on my Kindle to show up but once I disconnect my device it goes away. When I click on the "add books" button a window pops up and when I find my kindle device on my computer it looks like there are multiples of all the books I want to add. At first I added the whole list hoping Calibre would just add the "correct versions" of my books to my Calibre library but that was wishful thinking. I ended up with multiple listings of my books and some of the versions wouldn't open. I went through the Calibre Demo but when the demo hit "add books" it didn't look like what I see when I hit the button. I have windows vista.
