Hi I have a Sony PRS 505 which I enjoy. But why is it advertised that it will hold 16000 titles? After I put in 200 titles it slows down and crashes. I used 2gb memory stick and an 8gb sd card. The books were a mixture of epub, pdf and rtf. Any thoughts

This is a known limitation, the more books the longer it takes to create or update the database. Two solutions come to mind.

1. Stop trying to carry an entire library, limit yourself to 500 titles.

2. Install PRS+ (as described in this thread) and turn off scan of the sd card. Turning off card scanning stops the database from being updated. You can then use the browse by folders to find your books for reading.

Good Reading.

In case you had not noticed, RTF files take up about twice as much space as epub files. And PDF files can be easily ten times the size or even higher if it is created by scanning.

I have tried this -
Installation:

Warning: MAKE SURE YOUR READER IS AT LEAST 75% CHARGED before starting installation!!!

1) If you have hundreds of books in internal memory, remove them
2) Unpack PRSPInstaller folder from this archive to the internal memory of the reader,
disconnect reader from PC and follow instructions on the screen of the reader.
(press "bookmark" button if installer doesn't show up)

But it doesn't work

Since this has worked for me (and thousands of others) I'd suggest trying it again as written with all memory cards removed. If it still doesn't work re-download the file and try again.

Edit: You might want to try a different unzip program if the file structure doesn't look the same as the attached image. The extracted PRSPInstaller folder is what should be placed in your internal memory.

Download PRSP_505_2.0.17rc3.zip PRS+ 2.0.17 release candidate 3 for 505
from here

Unpack it, you should get a Folder "PRSPInstaller", with a sub-structure as shown in dwanthny's post.

A) Connect our PRS-505 to USB, copy mentioned Folder to the reader
(Just the root of the removeable media shown in Explorer/Finder)

Eject USB media, Installer should show up.

B) copy folder to a empty SD-Card,
insert SD-card into your PRS-505

again installer should show up

Good luck

The solution is to put books on a little bit at a time. Keep the 505 plugged into a wall charger because you will be running down the battery as you do this.

If your 505 crashes, then it's a problem with one of the eBooks you've put on and you'll need to find which one and not put it on.

The chances are that it could be one of the RTF or PDF. Try putting on just the ePub and once you are done, then put on the RTF. If that crashes, you know it's a problem with the RTF. Then once you finish with all the RTF that works, put on the PDF until you are done. Sure this is going to take a long time. But 16000 books is rather a bad idea on any reader. You will never read all of them all and I doubt (at the least) that you'd be able to read most of the PDF.

Look at the file before you put them on and see if they are readable. Downloading them from dodgy sources is going to get you a lot of poorly made files and ones that are going to crash your 505.

Strange,

1) Please go to SETTINGS - ABOUT and report your version info

2) have you tried to initialize the installer via SD-Card?

3) you may test the "autorun" capabilities of your reader by dl one of the "autorun-games" e.g. Fiveballes. Again copy content of archive to an empty SD-card. You should get a Folder SonyReader and insert this card into the card-slot.
Scaning "arrows" should show up, the the game had to pop up.

Most of the books which I have downloaded are epubs from Archive.org. What is the best format for the Sony?

The best format for the 505 is ePub.

What I don't know is if the ePub from archive.org conform to the mobile ePub spec. If not, they won't work. But if that is the case, you could try an ePub > ePub conversion using Calibre.

But before you do convert, try a small number of them and see what happens.

archive.org's ePubs are created by "raw" OCR from the PDF page scans. They are generally pretty dire. If the OP wants ePubs of the classics, he should first look here at MR, and then at PG.
