DRM Protected Error on T1 but OK on 950

I have one book which will not open on my T1. I get an error message that says "Protected by Digital Rights Management". This identical file opens fine in Reader Library and Reader for Mac. It opens fine on my 950 as well.

Any theories why my T1 does not like it? I have not had any other issues with Adobe DRM'ed files (either EPUB or PDF) on my T1.

I wish I could help you Bookworm_Girl, really, I do, but maybe a Google search for Apprentice Alf could help remove any encumbrance you're experiencing. PM if need be.

Yes, of course, but thanks for the suggestion. As I said, other DRM'ed files work fine on my T1. It's just this one file that works on other devices but not the T1. Since I can read it in Reader for Mac, I even synched it to the T1 via the Sony software. That didn't make a difference. I redownloaded other EPUB's from the same bookstore as a test and those work fine on my T1. Clearly the T1 is handling the DRM authentication differently or has a software bug of some sort. It would be nice to understand why. I'm sure I won't be the last to encounter this issue.

Oh I sure hope it's not a library borrowed book with the ePub PDF conflict that was fixed in the x50's!!!

It's a specialty bookstore - not one of the mainstream stores like Kobo, BoB, etc.

No, it's not a library book. Let's hope the EPUB / PDF conflict has been fixed forever! It's also not like the protected page error on the X50's that the firmware update fixed. I tried reset and power on/off. The book is still restricted.

I'm having a problem downloading certain books from GirlEbooks, is why I asked which store. I'm working with Laura on it - I think it's a formatting problem.

Perhaps it's related to your problem, perhaps not.

I did some more investigating. The file that I am having issues with downloads as an ACSM from the bookstore. I can open the ACSM file with ADE just fine. Then I can take the EPUB file from the Digital Editions folder and view it in Reader Library and Reader for Mac just fine too. I cannot open the ACSM file with Reader for Mac! I get an error message that "This item is expired". I also cannot open the ACSM file with Reader Library. I get the error message "Download failed. Network connection was lost. Please check your internet connection and try again (-441)". I have read that these errors can mean anything from an obscure server port that might be blocked by my firewall to something related to the time-stamp or time zone of the Adobe activation server. Since I can download other books from this store with no issues, I wonder if it might be the latter.

Kate, I read your post with your issues. They might be related if it is something to do with the time and might explain why my other Sony readers have no problem with this file.

Try moving the file to the T1 using Dropbox. When I did that with my problem files, the reader recognized them without a problem.

It's not a solution, but it might be a workaround.

I tried various methods and none made a difference. Dropbox, drag and drop, sync with Reader, etc.

If it were me, my next move would be to strip the DRM (actually, that would have been my first move )

Seriously the first thing to do on purchasing something is removing restrictions so that it could be converted to any future format...

I struck something like this helping a friend configure a new T1 (I have a 650). She had downloaded several ACSM files from our local library before she authorised the reader (her first). She then authorised the reader through ADE before trying to open the ACSMs to download the actual EPUBS, and received the same messages you did.

We downloaded several free books from Google Boooks and Gutenburg to confirm the T1/PC connection was working (it was). We then deleted the original ACSM files and downloaded again from the library site, and were then able to successfully download the EPUBs and transfer them to the T1. I don't know why it worked, but it did - I can only guess that the ACSM files include authorisation details.

If you authorised the T1 after you orignally downloaded the file it might be worth trying downloading the ASCM file again, then downlaoding the EPUB using trhe new file. Based on what we found yesterday this may help.

Alternatively, try Calibre and Apprentice Alf's solution, as suggested by others.

Thanks for your suggestions, KiwiKen! I'm sure your information will help someone else. Unfortunately that's not my problem. I bought the book after I had authorized the T1. Also, I did try to redownload the ACSM file several days later and still have the same issue. And, it's only this one book from that bookseller.

I don't really need to remove the DRM as I can just read the book on my other Sony ereaders or my Nook which have no problems with this file. At this point, it's the challenge of an unsolved problem and curiosity at why the T1 handles this book differently that is frustrating me.
