Wondering if LCD Side Can Be Turned Off?

Hi,

I don't own an eDGe, but was thinking of buying a used one on eBay. That's because it seems like it might be able to do something I've wanted (external keyboard with eink), but since the company is out of business I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer – so I thought I'd turn to people who actually have them!

Basically, I'm not that interested in the LCD side of things. I'm wondering if there's a mode where only the eink side is on, prolonging battery life. If so, I'm wondering if an external keyboard can still be used with that side, turning it into a long-lifed eink writer.

It's a long shot, but I'm desperate.

Thanks!

How are your Android programming skills? Also you know that e-ink is not a fast response medium.

To do what you want will require programming an app that interacts with the e-ink screen as there is nothing like that at the moment on the devices.

One thing you can do on the eDGe e-ink screen is make written notes with wacom stylus which can then be exported to other devices and OCRed.

Since the two screens are interlinked you can never completely shut down the LCD although the backlight can be turned off.

Welcome to MobileRead!

I don't know if an eDGe is exactly what you want. You cannot type on the eink side out of the box. You might get what you want using Javese's lcd2eink program (not sure, I haven't installed it yet ), but even if lcd2eink gives the effect you want it will require the use of the lcd to some extent.

Of course you can just get one and enjoy it, even if it isn't your perfect solution.

Thanks for the responses.

Sounds like this probably isn't the device for me – my Android programming skills being basically non-existent.

I'm fine with the slow response time on eInk – I don't really need to see what I'm typing in real time, I just really want something with the outdoor visibility, incredibly long battery life, and small form factor of an eInk reader, that I can use a full-sized keyboard with to write longform. Handwriting for OCR isn't really an option for me – if I could write sufficiently fast by hand, I'd use the old-fashioned non-e Ink!

Thanks again!

You can turn off the lcd screen and just use the e-ink. When you want to make notes you can quickly and easily turn the lcd back on to use the on screen keyboard.

I don't think you will find what you want unless you build and program it yourself. As far as I know there is no e-ink based unit that accepts keyboard input and displays it in screen - the various kindles accept typed input but only for lookup and dictionary usage not for adding to the screen.
