lookout anti virus app seem to soleve the sleep problem

Just like many on this forum, my Vox wouldn't start up after being in sleep for more than a few minutes (I have the latest firmware update). I installed lookout anti malware software from the getgar site and somehow with that app running my kobo vox, it wakes perfectly fine after several hours being asleep (2 successful wake ups, one while charging and one not charging).

I would recommend everyone else checking this app out as it's the number 1 rated anti malware app. It is very light on the system (only uses at most 7 megabytes of ram) and it offers services like scanning every app you install when first downloading them, automatic data back up to their site, and lost device retrieval. Again it is all free!

I would even advice Kobo in looking into offering this app included with the Vox. It will reduce future customer inquires/complaints as I'm pretty sure they're going to be a few Vox's out there not running properly because user's unknowingly got malware on their devices. Since the company behind lookout offers the app for free, I'm sure they'll be more than happy for Kobo to included it on all their devices.

Now, your post is very interesting....for I had downloaded this as one of my first app on-board's. As you, I have never had the sleep issue, and can be 3 minutes, or all night long in sleep and crank the puppy right up at will. You could be very right about how this program 'calls'...to the system. Good one on you, that you think this program running in the background has defeated (not in any legit way of course...) the sleep/freeze snafu. Like I said, I use it, and like you, have not suffered this problem. Edit: I also have no battery drain issues. This could be all tied up in some wayward O.S. handling.

Thanks for posting this. Having had a Mac for years I never think about virus issues and had not with my Vox... although I'm not a needy app kinda guy.

I do wonder how we can all have such different experiences with our little machines. It to have never had a wake from sleep issue even after two days. I also have no battery problems. I have not installed many apps and have removed most of the bloat ware perhaps that helps.

I've had Lookout installed from day #1. Still have to leave the wifi on to prevent the sleep of
death syndrome. I agree, though, that lookout is good as well as light.

Gary, coming from the Windows culture, the first thing I looked for..LOLOLOL..was viral and malware protection.

Another thing, is that there is no (that I am aware of...) fire-wall hard coded in the Vox. So..anytime you are connected to the Net, you are sill at risk of hacker/Trojan/bot infiltration. That is a given. Your Mac no doubt runs behind a firewall. If you use hot spots other than your locked down WiFi at home...this could be a vulnerability for your Vox. This program scans all that you have on your kit at boot, and then monitors as you are up and running, as you initiate an install...or worse...an 'install' that you did NOT! It then warns you at the top notification bar of what it has done/scanned/found.

I've read a whole bunch of threads with possible solutions, followed by posts from people for whom the solution did not work.

I've come to the conclusion that as long as there is something broken/unstable/wonky that has to be fixed by the developers, there is really nothing that will work for everyone until it is. My advice (not that anyone asked) is to figure out the easiest way to wake your Vox up and then try to wait patiently for Kobo to actually solve the problem.

Not that there is anything wrong with trying every fix folks propose, of course. I find (note this is just my opinion) that repeated tries and repeated failures are more frustrating then just living with it for awhile longer.

I just installed Lookout and have been using the Vox both on and off-line for the last couple of hours. And I've periodically put it to sleep and uneventfully resumed. So maybe this works. But - (isn't there always a "but" these days), my battery icon hasn't moved. It's started off FULL and has remained there - which is unusual. Normally, I'd have used about 20% to 30% by now. So is Lookout giving me added battery life or is the icon failing to accurately read the battery level now? Any one else made this same observation?

I believe the battery icon doesn't move until it dips below 20%. If you go to settings>application>Battery Use you'll see an in dept look at the power use of the device with a pretty graph displaying power consumption over time.

I find with my device it uses 10% energy for 40 minutes of casual interested use (not trying to play flash or downloading to much). I have the screen set to low and it's in silence. However, battery life can very what your doing online and what browser you are using (me opera mobile). lookout may very well have somehow reduce the negative consequence of a bug eating away at battery life but who knows. I've haven't really notice any weird reporting of battery life.

That's where I'm at with things & I'm getting along with my vox just fine. Sleep mode with wifi on when I'm at home & leave on the charger when it's in sleep mode. Getting lots of reading done. Some surfing too if for short spurts. I'm not so good at Angry Birds, but it makes me giggle trying.

Hehe, was also trying to type the above from the vox, more awkward than what I'm used to. I'm a fast typist with a real keyboard, so the touch screen is a bit too slow for me, not to mention trying to correct errors is a bit difficult. So I'm back on the laptop for this edit.

I had it installed from day one of purchase, and the battery icon will go down to the needs-recharging after about 6-7 hours for myself, so...I'd imagine that you are seeing a savings in that something is wrong with the software, and for some reason this program makes 'calls' to the O.S. that illegitimately 'corrects' any one or two issues. This is just an opinion and not given with authority, but mere reasoning. Your battery icon will go down, and not all of a sudden show ample power...but your Vox shuts down. This has been my experience from Oct.28th....

Edit afterthought: I put my Vox to sleep last night around 10:30 (22:30), in Airplane Mode, with a fully charged battery, and just pressed the on/off/sleep button once. Pressing it once in the morning, the lock screen came up with no problems and the battery icon showed green to the main battery body with only used-white showing at the battery 'positive' nipple. It was in sleep mode between 22:30 and 05:00 for 6 1/2 hours. Not bad at all. I think that after another O.S. update things will settle down with most birth-pang user issues. Kobo is surely monitoring all forum traffic.....
