UK: Asda goes dirt cheap on Kobo e-reader

From The Inquirer:

Quote:
UK SUPERMARKET CHAIN Asda has announced that it will sell the Kobo e-reader at a discount this Christmas season.

The firm will sell the Kobo WiFi for a cheap as chips price of £67 and £107 for the Touch version. In comparison WHSmiths flogs the Kobo for £89 and the Touch for £109.

Duncan Tate, a technology expert at Asda said, "The Kobo e-reader has received rave reviews and we're delighted to be able to offer it to customers at this breakthrough price before Christmas."

Asda will sell the e-readers from this Friday both in store and on its web site. The Kobo store offers more than 1 million ebook titles and the device comes pre-loaded with 100 classic ebooks.

Like Amazon's Kindle e-reader, which sells for £89, the Kobo has a 6in e-ink screen. It has 1GB of internal storage and a SD card slot for expansion. Asda said it will be the first supermarket to offer the Kobo.

The offer is part of Asda's initiative to make reading more affordable and accessible. µ

I wonder if ASDA will stock the Vox as well? It might make WH Smith reverse their recent £20 price hike. One of their assistants told me that they got no advance warning that the Vox was arriving. They are shifting them though. The Eastbourne branch had run out today.

There's an article today that says Asda will NOT be selling the Vox and that WH Smith welcomes new retail outlets for the Kobo reader. I guess WHS will hope that the new Asda kobo buyers will buy books from the WH Smith site.

Actually, they don't even need to buy the books from the WH Smith site. According to an article I read, one of the concerns of having WHS customers redirected to the Kobo bookstore when purchasing an ebook was that in future customers would go directly to Kobo. For that reason, when the partnership deal was struck between WH Smith and Kobo, it was agreed that a percentage of *all* ebook sales in the UK will go to WH Smith.

Asda are owned by Walmart, but they are certainly not "Walmart UK". They are a completely different type of store.
