iPhone 4 Explodes Midflight on Australian Airline
This is kind of scary and we should demand a lot more in manufacturing quality from a large company like Apple.

Now there's a thing.....
I seem to remember a thread a while ago that stated the security measures, including about things like phones etc... was a load of unnecessary nonsense.

"we should demand a lot more in manufacturing quality from a large company like Apple. "
Can anyone manufacture something that will never fail? The companies should be expected to do due diligence to create a good product, but they cannot be held responsible for the failure of one unit of thousands. If hundreds blow up then yes but electronics fail from time to time. This isn't the first battery to have a problem IF IT WAS THE BATTERY THAT FAILED. Laptop batteries cause problems, D cells can go bad and do similar things. |

Yes, exactly. Sony had an issue with their laptop batteries a couple of years ago, for example; there was a manufacturing fault which resulted in some batteries spontaneously catching fire. Lithium Ion batteries can do very unpleasant things if faulty.

I don't want to be overly conversational but the sony laptop batteries catching on fire is a design flaw as occurred to many of them. Hopefully it was just one odd hiccup for that few apple devices and not them using sub quality batteries for some of the iphone 4s being produced. By having these stories available we make sure that companies don't forgot safety should be their number one priority.

Maybe owner held it wrong way?
![]() PS Got mac notebook at work (for Safari's sake) with exploded battery. Torn apart aluminum cases looks scary. ![]() PPS Li batteries have built-in controller, that is supposed to prevent such situations (hm, I thought it could only happen when charging). Logically faulty controller should be a pretty common problem, yet I've only heared/seen such things only in connection with company that has invented rectangular shape with rounded corner. |

You're looking at it all wrong. The iExlosion is the latest feature of Apple iDevices.

We should perhaps treat these reports of "exploding" iPhones with a degree of caution, because we've heard it all before. This, from 2009, concerning "exploding" iPhone 3GS's:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8227028.stm Of course, that's not to say that the battery isn't the culprit in this latest case, but it may perhaps be as well not to pre-judge the matter. |
