Dymocks is partnering with Google for ebooks. I haven't had a chance to have a look through yet, but it's good to have another option.

I thought Google ebooks were only available in the USA???

I checked the Google app in iTunes - it has mixed reviews.

I don't understand how to use it with an Australian registered iPad.

And the prices Dymocks is charging - good grief. I wouldn't mind getting Marieke Hardy's "You'll be Sorry When I'm Dead" but the price is $29.99, the same as the hardcopy. Whereas the Amazon Kindle version is only $7.99. (Aust dollar is just about the same as the USD at the moment).

I'll be interested in reading reviews from Australians who have actually used the Dymocks/Google service.

A friend, who is an Environmental Biologist, is in Antarctica right now. He said that there would not be any cell service or WIFI.

I just saw something funny

The Australian google book store has been working now for a few weeks and google has partnered up with a number of local book stores.

see here
http://books.google.com.au/ebooks

Dymocks say they are partners with google books (Australia). Just having a look at both sites and the price for the books
"The Slap" Dymocks $24.99.... Google $9.18
"the Distant Hours" $23.99 .... Google $9.18

so how does this so callled partnership work?..

It's odd. Using the original post's link to Dymocks then clicking on their google books button I get the Marieke Hardy ebook at $29.99.

But using the direct link to Google Australia that you provided, I find the same ebook for only $7.29.

Well, I got brave and tried out Google Australia Books. It turns out to work well.

On my Windows PC I used the link provided by iandix (http://books.google.com.au) to buy the book.

With the wi-fi running on my iPad, I launched the Google Books app. The book cover was sitting there with a "Download" button underneath. I clicked on the Download button and the book downloaded to my iPad.

The Google Books app has some sour reviews on iTunes. I've only downloaded two free books and a paid-for book so far. I haven't experienced any problems. The Google reader is basic but good enough.

So...any Aussies wanting to use Google Australia Books - avoid the Dymocks website with its higher prices and go directly to the google website.

I had a look through and compared - dymocks doesn't have the full range of books in the google store, but with a few exceptions the prices were the same. Neither had some books I've got wishlisted at Kobo. So I'll probably stick with Kobo for now.

OT: There are lots of penguins. And even Penguins, in the library. There is no mobile/cell coverage and it's not set up for wi-fi although we have internet access, though a restricted pipe. Luckily books are small files.
