The Fire Becoming Old News?
Here's something I've been pondering. Things move really fast in the tech industry and shiny new toys stop being new pretty quickly. It already seems like there's a lot less out there about the Fire than there was before the holidays. It used to be like you couldn't go to a news website or a tech website without finding stuff about the Fire, but that's not the case anymore. How long until the Fire achieves the "just another device" status?

A lot has already been said about the Fire -- maybe too much. The news I read now is mostly what I call ripples -- articles that talk about the Fire but aren't about the Fire. A lot of these predict the demise of Android and Apple. If you like this stuff, just Google Amazon Fire then click News and Last 24 Hours. 6,870 matches for me just now...

I'm not clear on exactly you would expect to read at this point about the Fire. I think that just about anyone would say that the launch was successful, albeit with a few hiccups - many of the issues raised in early reviews were addressed in updates.
I don't know that anyone would call the device a game-changer, but even if you did, would you expect to see the same amount of buzz almost two months after its release? |

I think there's still plenty of steam for AZ and the Fire once all the folks that got them in Nov and Dec start to show them off to their friends and the friends end up wanting one for themself.
Word of mouth is the best free advertisement for any product. Look at the ipad and wii and how they took off and are still hot |

I agree on the word of mouth...I ordered mine while the press conference was still going on. Then my 26 year old wanted one for Christmas...then the 30 year old wanted one for his birthday. Now I've got friends asking to get together and see it.

The old news feeling is because the Kindle Fire is pretty much closed as it is now. There is no Bluetooth support, there is no camera, and there is no more than two points of multitouch. It is just a basic android device. You can put different Android custom ROMs on it, but that's pretty much it.
The apps that will be coming out in the next two months will dominate any discussion, that and whatever updates Amazon gives us. |

I don't think the Fire is old news yet. I think this article speaks volumes:
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/iPad-3-A...ews-13732.html I guess Apple's usual lawsuit route to squash the competition isn't working out so well against Amazon. http://www.pcworld.com/article/24429...tore_name.html http://www.pcworld.com/article/24549...artphones.html Last edited by obsessed2; 01-06-2012 at 08:45 AM. |

I have to say that i don't care that the fire doesn't have a camera.....why would i want to hold up a 7" tablet, try to hold it still and say "cheese"? I have my phone for that, or a regular camera! Crazy I know!! LOL! I also don't care that it doesn't have bluetooth....i love it as an ereader and love the fact that I can go online whenever i want to without dragging out my laptop. I was visiting friends over the weekend and took my fire with me, the day i left......they went out and bought TWO.
I think that anything will not be discussed as much after the holiday because no one is buying gadgets once that time of year is over, but i don't think it's losing steam. It's an awesome little device and does exactly what i knew it would do. |

I'll tell you what is old news, the Nook Tablet. Let's see what happens to B&N down the road and that device. Sure like to know what the sales figures were compared to the KF! Maybe they shouldn't have played with FIRE!

As far as the Fire being old news, though... I wouldn't say that it's "old" news, but rather it's more "new" news to see what other companies are doing to be competitive with the low price/lots of content combination that the Fire gives. |

My feeling is any tablet that cannot be used to make a Skype voice call is a substandard tablet. That includes the Kindle Fire and the nook tablet. B&N blew what could have been a leading feature for the nook tablet by not making the microphone standard so apps like Skype can use it.

Some people, me included, couldn't care less about Skype, for us its absence is meaningless.
