PRS-T1 - a couple general questions

Think of making a move from my k3 to the T1. A couple questions:

I seem to remember reading that collections on the Sony's will auto-create based on a Series I have defined in Calibre. Am I remembering correctly?

Chapters. Is there any way to seem them on the T1 (outside of the table of contents)?

The kindle has chapter markers. I believe Kobo, tells you you are on page x of y for the chapter. In all the screen shots I've seen of the T1, it looks like just the total numbers of pages is displayed.

Thanks.

Music funtionality

Hi Folks

I'm seriously considering this reader for my 80+ mother. I'm hoping she can work the touch screen with her arthritic hands. Most real books are too big and heavy for her. Also I cant get her a music player that she can work and am hoping this T1 will allow her to listen to mp3 music easily.

Does anyone that owns the device use it also for music. Is it easy to navigate (imagine your mother that does not use a pc , and is 84 and arthritic) ?

Yes, Calibre also creates collections based on Tags (you can of course deactivate that in the device plugin).

None that I know of. That's really something I'd like to have. Though you can root the T1 so maybe there is an Android App that has Chapter marks.

First, I think it would be a good choice.

It's amazingly light, the controls are really light, battery life is awesome, and combine with a beany bag small cushion, ideal for holding problems.
Should Mum be like me - tech-dunce - forget wifi and use Calibre.

A stylus makes navigating a lot easier, and I have seen little ones that fit on your fingers - ideal in this situation.

I havea few finger/thumb prob's, and can confirm the weight, heft, and shape are very "friendly" in such circumstances,

Loads of free epubs, see here for free library sources, a helper in Apprentice Alf if required, and reasonable fontsize choices.

Try one - you know her specific problem areas, but I'd be surprised if you're not impressed for your intended recipient.

I can highly recommend it to you as an ereader - it's narrower than other ereaders, making it easy to hold in one hand. It's very light and the touchscreen is very easy to work - it requires NO pressure at all (I had a gnat walk up the screen and highlight half a page. It was too funny!)

On the other hand, because e-ink readers don't require much electricity, they also don't have very large batteries. So you CAN use it as a music player, but that would run the battery down pretty quickly. I've never used mine for that purpose - perhaps someone who has can weigh in on that.

I never thought about the battery issue. Thanks for your comments. I did go to Staples tonight and played 2 songs that were loaded on the display copy. The volume was up all the way and it wasn't very loud. I hope they fix that.

Do you know, if i have a collection based on a calibre series, will it sort the books in the collection based on the book number in the series vs. a title sort?

I had a play with the music function last night. The touchscreen "buttons" should be large enough for her to control the play/volume levels etc. Its a pretty simple player. Has shuffle/repeat play pause stop and thats it. However the shuffle repeat only works for that particular "album" so if you like to shuffle all your music then you would need to put all the music in the same directory (presumably). I say presumably because I haven't gotten round to reading the manual

If her hand is not steady the only thing she might struggle with is the volume control slider - which you have to slide and not tap to change volume.

As others have mentioned it is light and easily held in one hand. You may want to invest in a case that also doubles as a stand so that she doesn't have to hold it as much.

Yes it does as long as long as you sort by added order, even if you add them out of order (say sending Book 2, disconnecting the Reader and later adding Books 1 and 3).
