Am I just paranoid?
I love how the Amazon cloud works with my music, that I spent better part of a week uploading to the cloud (my family still talks about the slow internet during that time). I understand movies (Mp4) won't play on the Fire, so there is no reason to upload them.
I would like to upload my books. However, they have all had DRM removed. They might have been bought from Amazon or been free from Amazon, or from another source. I am paranoid about uploading these to the Amazon cloud. I know that their business model would be absolutely crushed if they went snooping in the stuff people stored (although I would imagine they might screen for child pornography, terrorist plans). Am I being too paranoid? |

Depends on whether Amazon ever bother to enforce their terms of service. You did agree not to remove DRM from your purchases, after all. Can't you just upload the versions with the DRM still intact? Then if you need to you can re-crack them later.

Make no mistake, they are or will use your personal info for whatever purpose suits them.
How people can trust their info on cloud-like networks where the administrators and owners of such cloud can snoop all they want, is beyond me. If one day some company offers to keep a copy of their customer's home keys which could be helpful in case you lose your keys, no more need to break your door or call a locksmith, would you let your home keys with such people ? I guess a lot of people would but that would be a mistake. |

Theoretically, they can do you all sorts of harm all sorts of ways, as the Anything-but-Amazon crowd says.
But that's theoretically. In practice, ask yourself: "Why would they?" Amazon exists to make money. They make money out of your trust. Break that trust and... What you should be asking yourself is "...*how* paranoid am I?" ![]() If you're AbA paranoid, you wouldn't be dealing with Amazon at all. Or even be online at all. ![]() ![]() If you're all, "Amazon is my friend", then you wouldn't be asking the question. So, your next question might be, "how much effort am I willing to make use of that nice, juicy cloud storage volume?" Me, if it came to it, I wouldn't upload my deDRM'ed Kindle ebooks (if I had any) to the cloud simply because they'll count as personal documents while the originals don't. The point of deDRM'ing them is as backup and insurance, after all. Right? ![]() If they came from other sources and weren't originally azw, amazon isn't likely to care no matter how eee-vile they might be. (They won't care if you deDRM'ed somebody else's product after all.) If they were originally azw, a pass or two through Calibre to tweak file names and metadata might satisfy the mildly paranoid or a full conversion to .doc or .html format would suffice if you're a lot more paranoid. It really hinges on your degree of paranoia and the secret origin of the files. Flip a coin? ![]() Last edited by fjtorres; 11-20-2011 at 07:36 AM. |

Yes you are. But remember! The fact that you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.
Recently I have learned that the USA government - FBI - *did* have Ernest Hemingway under surveillance. For many, many years he was considered to be a prime example of paranoid person. Amazon will do anything that might gain them some advantage against competition, anything that might make bigger [future] profit. It is their duty to shareholders. At this moment, they consider super user friendly customer service to be their ticket to bigger market share and bigger future profits. The question is, what happens when they conclude that they have as big market-share as they can get. The question is, what happens when they conclude they can get advantage/profit by "leveraging" your data. |

If you have to ask yourself this question, then you should just get yourself a 2TB portable drive & hook it up to your pc. You will have your backup, and don't have to worry about Amazon snooping in your stuff.

Between my business and personal files, I have 3 2T back up discs. I would never allow my files to be stored online. maybe Amazon wouldn't do anything wrong, but an employee or hacker could.

I don't think you're being paranoid.
Encrypt your stuff, then upload it. They can't do anything with it. |
