Kindle at the airport scanner
Dear all, I need some help. I will be flying on Wednesday and planning to take Kindle in my handbag. I am a bit afraid to let it pass through the scanner for the xray. The netronix clone mentioned in my signature ended its short, pitiful, useless, disappointing life with cracked screen just after I passed security control/ scanner and it was in my handbag then.
Now, I know the reason for a cracked screen is not/may not be the scanner but once bitten twice shy. I do not want to end up at the airport with useless reader, frustrated that I can't read anything, with 6 unreadable, fat and juicy books I have been avoiding to read just to have them for the upcoming flight and for the week ahead. Mind you though, that netronix thing was of exceptionally poor quality. Shall I mention it to someone before it passes the scanner? What precautions to take? Karmalicious thanks for suggestions. |

I can share my experience as a "Road Warrior"... I have traveled with my Kindle and passed it in all kinds of scanners in the worst airports and it has survived. I recently visited Sao Paulo in Brasil and my Kindle 3 didn't have an issue. I use the official and standard Cover without light.

My response:
http://www.the-digital-reader.com/20...port-scanners/ Joking aside, if you're worried about the screen breaking in the scanner then remove the e-reader from your bag and put it in one of the bins. Send the bin through the scanner on its own. That should protect it from impact damage. |

I've flown a couple of times since having my Kindle, and it's been fine going through the scanners.

You could purchase a decent rigid or semi-rigid and padded case to place it in while it is in your travel bag. There are plenty of options available and you can often find one that is inexpensive when you look outside of the eReader accessories as those tend to have inflated prices.

@Nate
Ho hum, mixed feelings here. While I appreciate suggestion and will put it in separate bin I feel a bit unhappy about my post ending up on your blog like this. Funny comment as it is, it made me feel I should have not asked after all. Anyway, never mind. I never passed any expensive electronic equipment via scanner except that darn thing which malfunctioned literally 3 minutes afterwards. And was a newbie to ereaders back then. |

You can delay yourself and ask them to hand scan you. Personally, I also put my iPad and electronics into a bin by themselves. It is easier to repack on the other side of the scanner.

For what it's worth, this past summer was the first time I traveled with my reader - and I forgot to take it out of my carry on to put through the scanner separately. Huge panic - as the security people asked if I had a "tablet computer".
Normally, I take out my netbook, my phone, my GPS and now my reader and put them in a separate bin for scanning when I put my carry-on on the belt to be scanned. They seem to want most sorts of electronic devices sent through separately. It doesn't seem to affect the devices, but it keeps the security people happy. |

Recently I traveled with my 650 & my laptop. My wife had her laptop & her iPad. We went through 4 total security checkpoints with no problems at all. My 650 was in my bag every time it went through the scanner. I wasn't worried at all as I was the one how put my stuff in the bin. I had nothing in the bin that was able to put any pressure on the bag. The larger stuff that might have been a problem was in other bins.

I fly a lot and always take my Kindle. It has an Amazon lighted case, which seems to protect it well. I always take it out and put it on top of the tray to go through the scanner.

The xrays should not affect the electronics. People handling it could cause a break and if it gets jammed in the machine the feed belt could cause a break. My mother takes her DX with her whenever she flies, if has been through the machines in the USA several times with no issues. It is also in the leather case/cover.

my Kindle has more frequent flyer miles than many humans. it has never had a problem. like many others, I put my laptop, reader, cellphone, MP3, and any other electronics I may have all in one bin. no worries.
don't worry about the Dalek, it has an unusual sense of humour undetectable by many other humanoid life forms ;o) |
