I will rephrase my question:
Why does viewer fails when trying to connect to the dict.org server to lookup the word? I hope the answer is not : Because File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\viewer\dictionary.py", line 38, in run File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\viewer\dictionary.py", line 31, in define File "site-packages\calibre\utils\dictclient.py", line 43, in __init__ File "socket.py", line 224, in meth gaierror: [Errno 11004] getaddrinfo failed |

A getaddrinfo failed means the DNS lookup failed. Which means you dont have a working internet connection. Most likely culprint is stale proxy settings.

Could a user-friendly error message be added to calibre for this case?

There is a user friendly error message. The OP was posting the traceback from the error message. There's no way to present a user friendly version of the traceback as with internet connectivity too many things can go wrong.
