Does Screensaver use power or not ?

Hi all a very silly question so please excuse my newbness

When allowing my new T1 to enter sleep mode or activating it myself should I let it display the cover of my book or have it as a blank screen. Which option uses less power.

The reason I am asking is that I purchased this 3days ago and charged the T1 fully, deactivated WiFi and so whenever it entered sleep mode it displayed the front cover of my book. Now after 3days the battery is flat and I have only read about 100pages in that time.

Appreciate any assistance and information. Otherwise I am really enjoying my new reader, much clearer than my old 700 model, though I do miss the lighting option on it.

Cheers and thanks.

Whether you display a cover or not, it won't affect the battery. The screen will only use power when you change what is displayed on the screen. That's how e-ink works.

Your problem is probably that even though you put it in sleep mode, it's not going to sleep and the processor is busy doing something or other. Have you tried completely powering off the device and turning it back on and/or resetting it?

thanks for the advice BaenSidhe I will power it off completely and try a recharge and see how it goes after that. Appreciate the information!

Some power is drawn even when in standby mode even without wifi or anything like that. Not for the screen, but to keep it ready for a quick wake-up. It should not go flat in such short time though.

The same thing happened to mine,

I've bought my first e-ink device mainly for better battery life. It actually happened twice I was nearly going to return it to Sony but before doing that I decided to format internal memory, reset, put books back on and recharge.

That was on the 31st October, (the last recharge) it's still showing full battery life which is the longest it has lasted so far and I've completed reading a book. I'm feeling more confident in mine now. It must of been running something in background, have no idea what though, (I was suspecting the power save book cover too due to only reading a little bit of it before the power running out) don't listen to music on it and don't use wifi so I have no idea.

Hi!
In the german sony forum there was mentioned an issue which could be relevant. Some (only some) epub-files use a lot of power (probably because of unknown backgroundprocesses), even when the reader is in standby. The workaround is to go back to the home-screen before you go in standby state.

That is really interesting! I wonder if there is a way to tell which files use the power more.

The first few charge cycles, the battery meter can be 'off'. Be sure it's fully charged, that the light goes off, not just the battery meter showing full.

It would indeed be interesting and it doesn't hurt to go back to the home screen before going to standby, but it sounds like an old wives' tale to me.

I thought we were referring to a unique problem on the T-1, but folks at that link were also reporting this as a problem on the PRS-650? I'm sorry I just don't believe that. It certainly hasn't been reported here, has it?

I know the devices use power during standby, by while in standby epubs do not use "a lot of power." Leaving an mp3 playing uses a lot of power, but I do not believe that an open and idle epub uses a lot of power.

Bottom line is the OP was referring to extreme battery drain in 3 days. An open epub has never previously been associated with this kind of extreme drain on the battery.

Following Kate's advice will most likely solve this issue for the OP. If not I would return the device.

Thats right. But it was also mentioned with the T1.

Maybe blupaul can test the workaround to verify it. Instead of homescreen before entering standy a user suggests open the manual on the reader before entering standy.

I find it hard to believe for the x50 line of readers.

If someone is having the problem, there is no downside to trying these solutions.
