Kobo website different checkout screens Promo code Tease!

I noticed recently when I tried to purchase The Road by Cormac Mccarthy off of the Kobo website that the option to enter promo codes was available on the purchase screen. I knew from previously that this book did not accept promo codes so was kind of surprised to see it there. Anyway long story short you can enter all the valid codes you want and they will all come up as invalid. I tested the code on other books I know that do accept promo codes and they worked fine.
When I attempt the purchase under private browsing a different checkout screen comes up and there is no option for promo codes. Why do the checkout screens look completely different on the same website, and why would the promo code window be available when the book does not accept promos? This also happens on The GoldFinch by Donna Tartt.
Just curious has anyone else experienced this and what is the reason it would be happening?

Just a guess, but Kobo sometimes give out promo codes which only work with a certain list of books they are promoting at the time. A book that does not normally accept promo codes might be on one of those lists so they would need to offer the option to enter that promo code, even though the book still doesn't accept normal promo codes.

A good theory but that still does not explain why there would be no option to enter promo under a private browsing window, or why the whole checkout screen looks different.

Some others have found that which version of the website or which checkout screen they see depends on which browser they are using. Perhaps browsing mode on some browsers might cause something similar.

But there are lots of strange things going on while they transition from the old to the new website, this could just be another to add to the list.

The promo window shows up on every large publisher book I click on. Books that are filtered out by the eligible for promo code filter. Definitely some kind of bug.
I had to pay full price for the book too.
