Calibre Does not start after upgrading

Hello,
I have been far from my PC for 3 months.
Now I have updated calibre from version 0.7.x to version 0.8.22.

Starting Calibre the process allocates up to 60MB of memory and then stops. Calibre seems blocked but the process is running.

I have only a supposition: I have moved from dual monitor to single monitor due to graphic card failure. Is there a chance calibre is opening some window where I cannot see it ?

How long are you waiting before killing the process? There are database changes between 0.7.x and 0.8.x. The metadata database for your library needs to be updated before it will open. This can take a few minutes.

Other people have reported behavior like this. The window icon should still be on your task bar or whatever it is that your system uses. For windows, you can right-click on the icon, select 'move', and press the arrow keys to move the window from the non-existent screen to the visible one.

However, as user_none said, do wait a while. There are a lot of database upgrades going on.

No Icon. No Window.

The program ha been running for 4 hour and memory has not changed. The program is halted but running.

delete/rename the calibre preferences directory and the window should re-appear on your primary monitor the next time you start calibre.

I can't find the reference directory. Have searched in Calibre Main Dir and APPDATA.

I am assuming that you are on Windows? On Windows 7 the location will be something like C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\calibre
You may need Explorer set to show hidden files to find it.

There is no PREFERENCE or CONFIGURATION directory in such path :-(

Search your computer for the file global.py that is always resent in the calibre config directory

The folder called Calibre IS the configuration folder. Are you saying the path does not exist?

Solved with your and Kovid Answer. Calibre IS the configuration forlder. I have searched for Configuration or Preference direcory in the past without success

Deleting the calibre directory the Startup configuration window has appeared on the main monitor.

However, passing from multiple displays to single display calibre tries to open the window in the last position even if the monitor does not exists anymore. This is a bug...

calibre contains no code to control where windows are opened. That happens at the the level between the OS and the graphics toolkit.

My observations.

I run calibre portable and frequently open calibre in a dual monitor system at work and operate it in the second monitor. Once at home I open the same exact calibre and settings that were closed in the second monitor at work and calibre opens fine and does not leave the library, dialogs, or preferences hanging open in a second non-existing window.

My work (dual monitor) system is Windows 7 and my home system is Windows XP.

Understood. A year or more ago when all of my systems were all xp I did run into this error on occasion. If I recall correctly I would just delete the gui.py file to get calibre to open in the main window.
