Magazine Management

In advance, please forgive me if this information has already been posted. I have searched, and did not find anything specifically useful.

I'm looking for an easy way to manage my magazine collection. Perhaps it's the late hour, but I can't seem to find a tool for this, and calibre doesn't seem setup by default to handle these. I read something about using the date as a series to separate them, but that seems kludgy.

I have scores of PDFs, arranged in a folder structure such that uses the title for sorting (SciAm, NatGeo, etc) then within that folder the individual PDFs are labeled Scientific American - September 2011. Ideally, I'd like to further separate them by year, but I don't want to confuse calibre even more.

How can I get these organized properly in calibre? I imported them and it looks like a jumbled mess, with no proper metadata. With just a test import, I have 25 different "Authors" for different issues of the same magazine. I'd like these to be sorted under publication, then by date, hopefully with all the metadata filled out.

How can I accomplish this?

For this example: Scientific American - September 2011.pdf I would suggest the following:

Title: Scientific American
Series: Scientific American
Series_index: 2011.09

Good Luck organizing them.

This is basically the scheme I use for my magazines, except that I normally include the Month Year (or issue number if more appropriate) as part of the title so that I do not end up with lots of issues that I cannot tell apart by the title. Including the year.month or issue in the series index makes it easy to sort them into order.
