Went to buy a T1... played with it for a while... didn't buy it
I went to Best Buy to pick up a T1. Was set on buying it, despite the poor experience with the new SONY Reader software.
But I played with it for a while in the store. First, the good: - it's light - it's thin - it looks great and the finishing is not too reflective (I played with the black one). - it's fast - the screen is better than the 350/950 I have. Whiter background (slightly) and darker font (significantly). But, the bad: - once you put it in a cover with light, the thinness and lightness of it make no difference. Feels the same as my 950 with cover, no big difference. - no 3g. That bugs me. Ok, I knew about that... but still... Wish the G1 was available in the USA - stylus is big and there isn't a place to store it. Ok, I knew that too, but didn't expect it to be THAT big. - THE REAL BAD: insane levels of screen flashing. Headache stuff. I don't know if the model I played with was defective - didn't have another one out there. But the flashing is worse than any SONY ereader I have owned (900, 350 and 950). Very, very noticeable. This is a dealbreaker for me - but I will check another T1 out to see if that is just a bad unit. - ALSO BAD: the dictionary, bookmarking, etc. now works with HOLDING, not double-tapping. It's somehow slower and it leads to pressing your finger down on the screen, which gets it dirty faster. But, to me, it just feels clunky. So, now I am thinking. Smaller screen than my 950. No 3g. Stylus. Bummer, but I can live with this. But the screen flashing? No, no and no. Just too much. As I said, I will check another device soon. This week is my birthday and I deserve a new reader ![]() |

Doesn't flashing equal a lack of ghosting? I've much rather have flash per page than ghosting...dark, rich text is more important to me.

Personally my 950 does great and has a longer screen which is very nice. I just bought the 950 a week before the T-1 was announced so I might buy a new ereader in a couple of years. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 10-10-2011 at 08:11 PM. |

The T1 unit that I played with at my local Sony store did not seem to 'flash' any more than my prs350 does, so perhaps it was defective or the higher contrast is making the flash more apparent. |

Well, there are situations where the T1 will flash twice, or do multiple partial updates instead of one single flash.
I think it's those cases where it shows up as "flashing too much". Possibly some tweaking needed in the display drivers they are using. Just reading has been fine for me, no different than the previous models, and doesn't ghost like my 950 and 650 have done (especially when going to sleep). |

I say 'the unit I used' because I am hoping that was defective. It was so noticeable, I am hard pressed to believe they actually released something so... flawed. But yes, I do agree, strong flashing means less ghosting. There is some happy medium there, I guess this is not it - not for me, at least. I want a new reader, so I will try to check it out again. Probably will stop by my university store and see if they have any on display in a couple of hours... |
