OS X: Sony software does not recognise internal storage
I am attempting to use my Sony Reader PRS-600 with my MacBook Pro. It mounts three partitions when connected.
They are: Untitled (the memory stick) LAUNCHER (the 2009 software in a locked partition - handy?) Untitled 1 (the internal storage) The internal storage partition is not recognised by the Reader software under Mac OS X. I did a listing of Untitled 1 as root user: Code:
total 256 drwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 8192 9 Apr 14:48 .Spotlight-V100 drwxrwxrwx@ 1 _unknown _unknown 8192 27 Aug 13:47 .Trashes -rwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 4096 9 Apr 14:48 ._.Trashes drwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 8192 27 Aug 13:47 .fseventsd drwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 8192 9 Apr 14:57 Digital Editions drwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 8192 1 Jan 2009 database -rwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 296 6 Jul 15:38 driveinfo.calibre -rwxrwxrwx 1 _unknown _unknown 70067 6 Jul 15:40 metadata.calibre I can provide listings within directories if it looks the same to you; I just want it working for once. A little more research gave me an answer I may try out later: my MacBook Pro was purchased in early 2011, as such it comes with a 64 bit kernel. If I startup holding '3' and '2' on the keyboard, it will boot a 32 bit kernel, and the software may work right.
My only issue doing this is that I use 64 bit kernel software and it would prevent me using these while doing this. It's a rough annoying thing to have to do just to purchase a few books for your ebook reader. Sony, move with the times and port to 64 bit, please! Last edited by AprilHare; 08-27-2011 at 07:13 AM. |

I rang Sony about this in the past and they essentially asked me to format my Sony Reader. They are obviously unaware of this issue.
It's down to the fact their software won't work with new Macs straight away, since it comes with the 64 bit kernel nor Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. They may need to play catchup on this. Last edited by AprilHare; 08-27-2011 at 08:57 AM. Reason: wow, this was sloppy :) |

There is a simple work-around to this issue. When you download a book from the Sony store it is save the file in your 'Documents/My Books' folder'. You can manually copy the file to your Reader by dragging it to the 'Untitled 1/database/media/books' folder on your reader's internal storage.
There was another, much longer thread on this issue several weeks back that explains exactly what is going when OS X is booted to the 64 bit kernel. |

Here is one of the longer threads on this issue, AprilHare. There have been several other threads as well if you keep searching. It is very frustrating!

Well, this thread is now irrelevant with the new version of the Sony Reader software. It's nice to see it work with 64 bit Mac.
I wonder if someone from Sony reads this forum?.. If so, thankyou for your effort, it's very much appreciated by us all! |
