Can someone explain whispernet and if this is possible?

So I'm looking at the new Kindle Touch 3G and drooling over it, but then reading up on it, speculation is that the web browsing is extremely limited over 3g (if not non-existent) as opposed to the Kindle 3 3G which was just extremely frustrating.

My question is, if it is true that the Touch 3G web browsing will be limited to Amazon, wikipedia, and a few other sites, with the way whispernet not being true 3G, does that mean that the website blocking would also carry over to the Kindle Keyboard 3G / Kindle 3 3G? Or is it actually possible for Amazon to block websites for the Touch but not the Kindle Keyboard?

I'm still contemplating which version I should get...

Amazon can do anything they wish when it comes to site blocking, since all content goes through their proxy server, and they know exactly which model of Kindle you are talking to that server from.

However, that being said, I don't believe for a moment that the Kindle Touch 3G's web browsing will be any more (or less) restricted than that of the K3. There's a great deal of confusion about this at present; I'd suggest waiting to see what actually happens when the Touch 3G is released. Personally, I'd be extremely surprised if web browsing on the 3G were to be any different to the way it is at present.

You're really NOT going to want to do a great deal of web browsing on the Kindle. It's not the world's greatest surfing experience.

I realize it's not that great, but the touch interface would definitely make it a lot easier to use. My main interest in having web access is for emergencies. I'd probably never use it, but peace of mind is worth more than anything. I believe the Touch will be limited because of all the evidence I've read. My guess is that it will be severely limited but still allow a handful of websites... enough to claim that you can web browse over 3G (to entice people) but not disclaiming that it is any website you'd like. If it were true, I'd definitely throw out the nice touch interface for unrestricted web browsing, but I would hate to buy a K3 only to find out that they were planning on gimping it to Touch restrictions... because in that scenario, I'd just go for the Touch wifi. I'm sure that if there were different restrictions per device, someone would probably figure out a way to spoof the ID so that Amazon believes you're on an older model though...

Well, it's all just speculation until someone gets their hands on a 3G Touch and tries it. I wouldn't sweat it too much - Amazon have a generous return policy. There's no danger in ordering a 3G Touch; you can return it for a full refund within 30 days if it doesn't do what you want.

I don't think that touch interface will significatly change the browsing experience. Although it will be easier to click on individual links, eInk will still be slow and you loose scrolling via page turning buttons.

This new device is not meant to be a Swiss Army knife. The Kindle does what it does better than any other device I have seen. I can't think of a do-all device but some of them come close. I have aa Acer A500 for my tablet but would rather read on my Kindle3.
