difference between shutting down and screensaver
Hi everyone,
After shutting down the device kindle 3,I found it turning on almost as quick as waking from the screensaver mode. Does that mean shutting down functions almost same as the standby mode? Or what's the difference? |

From everything I've read on many forums and discussion groups, it's best to simply leave your K3 in sleep mode (with the screensavers). Apparently it takes more battery power to shut down/turn back than it does to let it simply sleep.
I've had my K3 for nearly 10 months, and it has never been completely turned off .... it naps very nicely. |

Are you sure you turned it off? If the K3 is completely off then the screen is totally blank--no screensaver. If you see a screensaver then it is in sleep mode. I think it would take a lot more time to start up from off as it has to restart the system.

Putting it to sleep and turning it off are greatly different in restart times. When you put it to sleep, it takes a second or two to resume reading. When you turn it off, you need to wait for the tree-screen to load...and that takes a bit longer.

My K2, KDXG, and K4 all go to a blank screen after the power switch is activated for several seconds. But all three wake back up from the blank screen just as quickly as from a "screensaver" screen. |

When we got our K3s last year there was talk about the white appearing to have better contrast than the graphite model. Since we had one of each I thought I would take a look.I put them side by side under the kitchen florescent lights where I cast no shadow. I didn't see any difference after very close examination (same book - same settings). Since I always turn mine off and my wife always puts hers to sleep, I thought I would recheck to see if this could have a bearing on discrepancies that others have found between the K3 and K4. My K3 (always off) now has a brighter background than my wife's (always put to sleep). I looked at them under same conditions as I did last year. I have a K4 on the way and will put all three side by side and see what it looks like when it gets here. Regards - John |

You're not holding it long enough. Hold it longer and it really will shut down, and will do a full reboot when you next slide the power switch.

Although the user guide states holding the switch for 7 seconds turns it off, in reality it seems that is just another sleep mode. Turning it off fully only happens when you reset it by holding the switch in for 15 seconds. I may be wrong but that's how it seems to me?
1. Slide and release puts it to sleep with screensaver. 2. Slide and hold for 7 seconds, puts it to sleep with blank screen. 3. Slide and hold for 15 seconds turns it off. 1 & 2 doesn't use any battery life after it's been put to sleep, the screen resumes within seconds and only uses minimal battery when doing so. 3 doesn't use any battery life after it's been turned off, but it takes a while to load (the tree screen appears at this point) and uses up considerably more battery when doing so. |

just tried 13 seconds, no go, and now 14 seconds, again no go, and now 15 seconds, still no go. each time after i let go a few seconds later the green light came on and it started up with a re-book, exactly as the users manual says it will.

The reason I say "I speak from personal experience" is that I needed to reboot my Kindle last week (the web browser started doing funny things), and that's exactly what happened to me. I held in the power switch for a long time, the screen flashed white, and I let the switch go, expecting that it would reboot. It didn't. It was only when I pressed the power switch again that it booted, and it was a full reboot, with the tree, etc. So, I really don't know HOW it happened, but happen it assuredly did.

Well I've had fun today trying different variations and it's worked differently every time.... when I tried to reset it earlier, it worked just the same as you described HarryT, it switched off and I had to press the power button to turn it back on, then it went through the full reboot.
I then tried holding it for little longer (20 seconds), this time it did reset on it's own. I've just tried it again now and whereas before when I held it for around 12 seconds it just went to sleep with a blank screen (resumed within seconds), this time it reset again. When I hold it for 7-10 seconds it goes to sleep with a blank screen. One good thing with all this fiddling around with the on/off button, it had previously felt a bit spongy, now it slides along easily the same as the other Kindle we have ![]() |
