79 dollars = 89 pounds ???
dunno what exchange rate amazon are working on but this looks like a huge rip-off of UK customers
amazon.co.uk are asking £89 for the basic $79 kindle, and they are not letting UK customers get at the new touch or the kindle fire at all. |

No, the OP is correct, the one we are being offered in the UK for £89 is the one being offered in the US for $79, not sure where you get the $109 as this is not one of the prices being offered for the new Kindle range ($79, $99 or $149)

$109, at the current exchange rate, is £69.67. Add 20% VAT and you get £83.60. Calling the UK price of £89 "a huge rip-off" seems to be a slight exaggeration - it's only £5.40 more expensive than the US price. |

Amazon is advertizing the prices "with special offers", i.e. with ads as screen savers. They also offer versions "without special offers" for $30-$40 more. In the case of the basic Kindle, $79 with ads becomes $109 without. If there is only one price in the UK, it is presumably for "without special offers".

This is exactly why I think Amazon should be publishing/advertising the non-Special Offers price as the base price for each model—in the U.S. and everywhere.

Get it through a mail forwarding company like Shipito. I buy lots of stuff through Amazon that "cant be sent to your address", and i just get it sent to Shipito (get an account set up), and when i feel i have enough stuff for a decent parcel, i get them to forward it! The best part is, theshipping is actually cheaper than i can get it for most times, as they get preferential rates!
I used to get really pissed off with goint through the process of "shopping", only to find that when i went to pay, half the items couldnt be shipped to my address. Not now, I can order anything from electronic goods to rifle scopes!... Its an easy process, firstly get your account set up with Shipito, then add your new "US" address on your Amazon account, then when you go to pay, if you have any products that cannot be shipped outside the states, just redirect them through your new US address. The service costs very little, and if you do any amount of online shopping it will pay for itself very quickly. |

Just to add that my next purchase is a Mac laptop, and by getting it straight from Apple, and sent through my "US" address, it will save me hundreds of $$$$.

The Amazon video services, which the Fire seems to be being sold primarily as a content delivery vehicle for, are currently US-only. Unless or until that changes, I think the Fire will remain US-only.

By the way, I am an expat Brit living in New Zealand (south island). We have pretty much fek' all here, and what we do have is always end of line stock. We are the dumping ground for the rest of the worlds "yesterday" goods. Even then we get fleeced something rotten! Thats what prompted me to shop online for most everything. Even with the shipping costs, I still get stuff here that is either unavailable locally, or far cheaper than is available.
A good example, we wanted a gas wok burner for our new kitchen, and the "old" model was $1800 from local strores, was offered an ex-display one for "1100. I got the newer model (which the local suppliers insisted didnt even exist!) for about $600 all up, including postage! Sorry to go off topic a bit, but just saying, there's more than one way to skin a cat. |

That's how they started out when "special offers" were introduced. It looks like now "special offers" are the default and the "non special offers" are, well, special.
