Your input will help decide where my money goes.
Hey everyone my name is Barak and I've been lurking around on this forum for a while but finally decided to join because I haven't found the answer I'm looking for anywhere, and this seems like the best site to get one.
I'm currently looking at buying an e-reader (shocking right) because I have returned to school and want all the free Epubs, the problem as you may be aware with epubs is they are not read on the Kindle, I think the kindle is awesome and before a fanboy jumps in, the Epubs from my schools library will be DNR encoded, its not a public library, not on overdrive and therefore I would have to decode and convert every book, journal, and article I want from the school, so no. (unless someone can explain to me why this isnt a problem) Right now I'm looking at a Kobo and a Nook, text books aren't soooo important as I said, mainly the Epubs I am planning on getting for free. I dont listen to music really, I dont need an internet browser and I wont be buying books (maybe like 1 or something, I read enough school stuff as it is) Basically what I'm asking is which would be the best for logging on from my ereader and downloading (can i log onto my schools sites from e-readers using personal logins?) and then which one do you think I will have the most enjoyment with, I am guessing I will be using it 3ish hours a day. Thanks alot for your patience and any answers ![]() Barak |

If you like the kindle and you have to convert anyway just go with kindle and convert to kindle format.

You say the library isn't Overdrive, but what is the DRM they're using then? Are they using Adobe's? If so, then you won't have to convert or strip the DRM for Kobo/Nook/Sony.
However, if it isn't Adobe's, are you sure you will be able to strip it? From what I understand, there are some DRM schemes that haven't been cracked. I'd suggest talking to your school library about ereaders; they are probably the only ones who can answer the question of whether you can log into their site using an ereader. |

When you talk about free books, are you talking about classics out of copyright or free promotional books? If you want the classics, you can get very nice versions here at MobileRead, for free. Most of these books are posted in multiple formats, but it is simple to convert DRM free books from one format to another in Calibre. If you mean promotional books, Amazon probably has the largest collection of free for a little while books. Many of these books have DRM that you would have to strip before converting. In either case, a Kindle could work for you.
I've never heard of DNR encryption and agree that you should check with the librarians for a list of readers that are compatible with the library books. |

If you're happy to sideload, I have to recommend the Kobo Touch. It's a nice little reader that they are constantly improving. Currently it lacks a search function (rumoured to be coming) and "bookshelves", but you can add your own fonts, huge number of font sizes and margin/spacing differences possible and none of the memory is "reserved" for company only books like the Nook has. |

Hey sorry for the late reply and thanks for all the responses. Yah i did mean DRM, i talked with the librarians and they told me that most of the files were in a DMR protected Epub format, she also informed me that digital reserve books were currently only able to be checked out for 2 hours (retarded or what) the research i did on my own seems to show that a kindle wouldn't work as it would be able to use the files at all (come on guys, no epub?) and that though i could side load the files to my reader, whats the frigging point of dropping a hundred dollars to try and speed read, and then go back to my computer and do it again. Also i found that the book in kindle format werent really much or any cheaper then the books in "book" format.
thanks again |

The file may not necessarily be an Adobe DRMed epub. My alma mater has Safari Tech Books in its collection that you read through a special web application... no downloading to ereaders.

I've never heard of "DNR encoding"; we probably shouldnt assume that such items can be converted with the usual tools.

The OP says later in the thread that s/he meant to type DRM. I was also trying to figure out what DNR meant, and all I could think was, "Why would an ebook have a Do Not Resuscitate order encoded in it?"

DNR is generally your only option after you have stepped on your ereader.
