What to do first-NEWBIE ALERT

Okay-I bought the Pocket Edge Dualbook off of Woot. I want to use this mainly for reading books but might want to download a simple game or two and check facebook.

What do I do first with this thing. I moved past the registration page, thanks to a post in here. but the rest of the stuff I am totally lost at what I am suppose to do.

Do I try to upgrade it?

Any assistance would be great.

Upgrading the Edge is a matter of personal preference but, most forum users who have performed the upgrade are generally happy with the results, especially on the Pocket Edge. However, if you are mainly using it for reading and a few simple games and Facebook then the current Operating System may meet your needs. I suggest playing around with the PE and see if it does what you want it to do. Since you like books start by downloading a couple of Apps and visit some websites for that purpose. Books from Barnes and Noble CAN be read on e-Ink side. Books can be found opening Library App from Home Screen, select Storage (top left pull down), then sdcard/Nook/Content/ Press and hold downloaded book and Add to Library. Use First and Last Name as it appears on the credit card used to purchase the book for Username and Credit Card # for Password.

Updating's a bad idea, it's only beta, and you can wind up bricking your device forever. :O At least, if you peruse the threads in these forums, you'll keep bumping into reports of upgrade wrecking eDGe's! You need never upgrade your eDGe...just turn automatic check for upgrade OFF in the eDGe settings.

Use the browser like you do w/any system, to get to facebook. For games, try slideme.org. Download their Slideme store app, so you can efficiently view all their available apps. There is a game category, to make things easy. Many of their apps are free...in fact, you can set the Slideme app to view only free stuff.

Congrats on purchasing a very fine mobile device worth it's weight in SIM gold. Five full pirouettes for you!

Personally, I prefer NOT to wind up with a permanently BRICKED dualbook! Or are you willing to buy the disappointed person a new eDGE, if their device drops dead as a result of taking your advice?

That's why I said it is a personal preference. In fact if you read my post I suggested she stay with Dingo if it meets her needs. As far as the beta bricking your device it is probable but HIGHLY unlikely. The people who had problems (mainly White Screen of Death) is more likely a hardware problem and not caused by the upgrade. There are literally thousands of Edge users on this forum who have installed the beta with no problems whatsoever, myself included. If you were to ask them which firmware they prefer almost everyone would answer the Ermine beta. I own three Entourage devices, 2 Pocket Edge and one full-size Edge all upgraded to the Ermine beta. On the PE the beta works flawlessly and is highly polished. On the EE some users report hibernation and browser issues. I haven't experienced the hibernation problem with the Ermine beta on my EE most likely due to the Hardware (chipset) in my EE.

Here's what I did, and what might work best for you: Try one thing at a time.

1. Set up your wifi, then your email.

2. Learn to use the browser -- find out what all the icons mean and what you get by pressing the Menu button or double-tapping the screen.

3. Download or sideload a book and learn about all that's available on the e-ink screen. There are several menus and you can do different things depending on whether you put a book in the Library or read it from Storage.

4. Try out the calendar, working with both the e-ink and the LCD screens.

5. Try the camera, audio recorder, Docs-to-Go, etc.

6. Install an app or two.

7. Find your way around ES File Explorer, set up your LAN connection if you have one.

That much took me about 2 months.

Once you're comfortable with your new device you can decide whether it does what you want as-is, or whether you want to try the update.

Thanks for all the advise. Tried unsuccessfully to download a book yesterday. I don't get WIFI at work so I have limited time that I am able to play with that aspect of the device which is why I got the darn thing.

I tried to set up my email but I am assuming that I cannot use my yahoo account. So....my mission today is to read up on how to do that and maybe when I get home and have WIFI I can work on setting it up.

I guess I am getting frustrated because of the lack of ability to get a book. but I just had surgery and in my defense I am blaming everything on the pain pills.

All excellent suggestions from Filark. Experiment. Setting up e-mail should be pretty painless. When I set up my Verizon account all I had to do was enter my username and password and everything else was done automatically.

Thanks. I tried to enter my Yahoo Account automatically but it didn't work. However, I verified that the Manual method works by performing it on my own PE. When you are prompted to Set Up a New Account enter your Yahoo e-mail address including the @yahoo.com and your Password and then select Manual Setup. Make sure you select IMAP and then enter the information in the attached Yahoo PDF from the previous post and you should be good to go. Just let me know if you need any additional help.

SherriK, how and from where are you trying to download a book? Do you have books on a PC or Mac that you want to sideload?

Whatever the problem is I'm sure we can help you solve it!

An excellent source of good information for new PE/EE owners are the sticky threads at top of the forum.(including the one from obsessed2). As far as upgrading I'd wait until you are familiar with what it can do out of the box and then upgrade if desired. Personally I upgraded to ermine and am very happy with the result. But no action is w/o risk.

Hip Hip Hooray, I was able to set up my email yesterday with no glitches. As far as the books goes no luck so far.

I tried to download the Amazon App and the Nook Reader and was told that it wasn't valid for the pocket edge. I have the Amazon Store on the PE but everything (just a couple of things) I tried to download said it was not compatible.

Can I copy books to a USB drive and add them to the reader that way? My goal for tonight is to get a book on the reader!

This is a great website, I think I would have tossed this thing into the wall if it wasn't for all the help on here.

The Amazon App Store requires Ermine. Since you are running Dingo it will not work. You can download an older version of the Nook App which should work with Dingo from Freewarelovers using your PC and transfer to your Edge using a thumb drive. You may have to try a few of the files until you find one that works. It's OK because those that will not install and give an installation error will not hurt your PE. Believe it or not I'm still running Nook version 2.3 which is the second download link.
