PRS-T1 case
Hi all, does anyone know if the T1 will use the same cases as the 650? I've already had to rebuy when I moved from the 505 so I'm thinking if they are different I may go with the Kindle to show Sony the error of their ways

I don't think so. Height is different:

Come to think of it if you can rebuy a $200 device each year just to read books on why are you being so cheap when it concerns the case?? It would be far cheaper just to buy paperbacks if money was an issue. ![]() Last edited by Tony1988; 09-09-2011 at 12:35 PM. |

Yes, e-reader makers are gouging us on cases so I feel your pain. I doubt it's just Sony. Does an Amazon K1/2 case fit a K3? I really doubt it. On the other hand, if you have a 650, why buy a T1? It's barely an upgrade.

I'm sure they execs at the Sony Reader headquarters are running around waving their hands in the air screaming.
"Stop the robots! We have to redesign the entire reader! DAVE hates the cases!" That'll show 'em. Really? Over the life of my 505 I've bought 4 different cases. Having to buy a new one for the T1 is no biggie - I'd probably be in the market for a new case anyway, as my main one is getting pretty beat-up looking. It's a new device. Just because it's made by Sony and it's an ebook reader is no reason it needs to have the same form factor as the previous models. If you want a Kindle, buy a Kindle. You'll have to buy a case for it, though, so I don't see how you'll be coming out ahead. |

The T1 is a different size and shape. Even the 600 case did not fit on the 650. Now you could have modded the 600 case to fit. If you look at some of the photos, you'll notice that the case is a completely different style.

![]() If you switch from one generation of an electronic device (whether an e-reader or some other device), you're more than likely going to have buy a new case and maybe some other new accessories as well. I've never heard of anyone buying or not buying a device because of the case. When I buy any electronic device I just assume that a case for it is going to be part of the cost of having it. You're going to have to buy a case for the Kindle anyway, so I really don't understand your logic at all. Your post is a joke right? Because it seriously doesn't seem real. |

If you think about it, the fact manufacturers don't include a case with a device, must mean it doesn't need one............
Therefore the screen won't get damaged, 'cos they've decided it's strong enough not to need any protection............... Otherwise, they would feel obliged to provide a case, to save them having to replace the odd one or two that do get damaged - by, say, a nuclear strike or somesuch....... Because they care so deeply, see ? ![]() |

I have no objection to buying a case, so far I've bought 3. What I did object to, was that the 650 was 4mm shorter than the 505 making the £40 case useless and forcing the purchase of another £40 case. I expect the difference to be only a couple of mm here too which leads me to believe that it's a tactic to sell more cases.
This is why Apple keep customers - the iPhone is the same height and width as the iPod always has been, and has the same connector in the same place. The reason for switching vendor is not the cost - it's a vote. If we all go along with everything they do then why would they change? The reason for upgrade is that my screen broke - hopefully this will be under warranty as the device suffered no impacts while sitting on a table overnight. I was just planning in case I have to upgrade as the 505 feels a bit old fashioned now. |

If the only difference were the case, you might have a point - but since this is a serious upgrade in functionality and a steep decline in price, I don't think your argument holds much water. But it's your money - do whatever you like. I've already pre-ordered mine. ![]() |

I'm not sure how long you've been buying iPods but you're very wrong! The iPods are NOT the same by any stretch of the imagination. LOL Far from it. I have 3 different generations sitting in front of me right now. Length & width are the same, yes. But the depth, screen size and touch wheel are different with each generation and necessitate the purchase of a different case because of it. So, I don't know what you're talking about here but you're off kilter with your facts. And as far as the connector goes, nope, not really the same either. I have a couple of sound docks for my iPods and while the connector looks the same, the internal mechanics of it are not. I also have an iPod Nano, 5th gen & it doesn't charge on any of the sound docks the way the larger Classic iPods do. It's the same connector physically but it has something to do with USB & Firewire internal connection. They don't charge on the sound docks because Apple decided to change it. I went to the local friendly Apple store to look for an adaptor to make it charge on the docks I already own. The tool told me I had to buy new sound docks. ![]() |

So far, it's been lucky that the biggest change that's happened to the cables is the Firewire/USB2 nonsense. Quote:
