Removal of Permalink/Right Click on Server
Hi,
This is my first post, just found y'all today. I know I am going to love this forum! I am a medical transcriptionist, work from home and have only recently "found" Calibre. I had just the day before paid $39 for another management program "All My Books" that is far inferior. I hope to donate at the beginning of October because the application is amazing. Because I work from home on my computer, running the server feature is a little iffy as far as security. I have it set up and running, but the right click and permalink features that allow people to get the actual link to the file on my computer, even send the link, makes me nervous. As of now, only my 6 children access the server besides me, but it is still something that I am wondering if can be turned off. Just clicking get so they can do the download is all I want them to be able to do. Anybody know if this feature can be turned off and only a direct download that does not show the url (straight into my computer) is possible? You all sound so smart that even as I post this I fear it may be a stupid question... ![]() Last edited by all8maxwells; 09-10-2011 at 07:56 PM. Reason: changed superior to inferior - total typo! |

My attitude is, the stupider the question the more you learn from the answer, so ask away
![]() With the server (any server, not just calibre) what happens is that the server sends the file from your computer to the users computer. The file might be opened automatically in a viewer on the users computer, so you think that it is not being sent, but behind the scenes that is exactly what is happening. If you are concerned about random strangers accessing files on your server, there are two things to be aware of: 1) The server only gives them access to files inside your calibre library so dont put sensitive stuff in there (you can keep two separate calibre libraries) 2) You can protect access to the server via a password (see Preferences->Sharing over the net in calibre) |
