content server - port forwarding & security
My son has set up the calibre content server so it is accessible from outside our house. He tells me he used port forwarding on the router to do this. I can now access my books via the web from anywhere.
It's a fantastic feature but I have told him I have concerns over the security of our network now. He is only 11 so I'm not sure that he knows enough to be able to reassure me. He has set up a password on the server, but is there anything else we (or rather he) can do to make it even more secure. And has anyone had an "attack" or similar because of port forwarding? Thanks |

Port forwarding is required for this and many other programs to operate. I think the security risk with the password set is minimal. Enjoy the content server feature built into calibre, he implemented it exactly as it was envisioned to be implemented. |

Security in this setup depends largely on the choice of a good password and the implementation of the server used. The Calibre server is cherrypy, you'll have to judge the security of the password yourself.

Thanks for your comments. I'll suggest we strengthen the password and enjoy accessing my books from anywhere.
And it's good having a one man help desk in the house as well! (and he only charges $6 an hour - slave labour really). |

A strong password is something long (8 or more chars) that is not found in a standard dictionary nor easily guessed (from info about you) . It should contain a mix of case, numbers and allowed symbols.
