How are recommendations chosen?

When opening my Home page in the Kindle Store I get a prominent set of suggested titles. At a glance these appear to be simply books by authors I've already read or sampled (including some I've already bought and read!), with no further refinement. In particular, no account appears to have been made for samples that have been rejected, i.e. not subsequently bought.

Is there really no more intelligent analysis used by Amazon to create this nicely presented and potentially useful list please?

Terry, you say "no account appears to have been made for samples that have been rejected, i.e. not subsequently bought."

But how would they know you rejected it? For all they know, you haven't yet go round to reading the sample, and you might appreciate a gentle reminder.

That said, your main point is valid. I occasionally see recommendations for the very same books that I recently bought, which seems silly. For the most part, I think the recommendations are reasonable - but not always.

You can always click on "I own it", or "Not interested", or click on "Fix this" if you don't want recommendations based on certain books. Sometimes I do this when their categories are obviously messed up, and they think some sci-fi book means that I am interested in vampires, or something else weird.

Whatever the algorithm is that they use to make recommendations, it seems pretty good. I often find the recommendations to be of interest, and frequently buy them.

Eh? Where are you seeing those options? Here's what I see after selecting one of the many redundant recommendations on the Store's opening screen:

As for 'I own it', they already know that, which is my point! The charge appears on my credit card statement promptly enough....
