Good ol' Vladimir.
When he needs downtime from wrestling bears and diving topless into frigid lakes, he can enjoy a relaxing read ![]() It would be great for kid's backs not having to lug heavy text books to school each day. When our youngest got her Macbook in year ten, it was well worth it. |

Let's not overlook the fact that Putin is very smart and a champion strategist and the Russians have more experience with eBook readers than most. They're being careful, only sampling 1,000 units, but it will be interesting to see how it goes. The plastic logic units are supposed to be large, very light and flexible: they may be perfect for school children.

I'm always hesitant about taking my 10" PB902 out of the house. A reader with the same size screen that is lighter and less fragile would be welcome, even for someone who hasn't been a school child for many a year.

It has nothing to do with Putin. He may be smart but probably he has nothing to do with this development. The real reason that this e-reader sounds promising is that Russians are avid readers of e-books. The lax enforcement of copyright laws means that closed e-book model like Amazon Kindle or Adobe DRM is not very appealing to readers, thus there is a market for more open and functional devices.
It is nice that someone is trying to fill this market although the low purchasing power of Russian people makes it rather risky venture. No wonder that they are targeting schools which could ensure government contracts. It is worth it if they succeed to make a better e-ink reader for academic needs.
