See "on device" when not connected

Is there a way to enable to column "on device" even when the device is not connected? Ive been doing a lot of library management lately and moving books to my Kobo. There are times when I just want to look at the database and see that a particular book was transferred.

My guess is that the state of the device is not stored, however this wouldnt be a hard thing to implement. A few new fields in the database.

It is only stored on the device itself. A new field in the database wouldn't be handy. What if you have multiple devices? Which would you store in the DB?

I made a custom column: "updated", which I change to "Yes", when I add a book, or update a book. And once it's transferred to my various devices, I'll turn it back to "No".

Yes, as Sweetpea says, the issue would be those people who use multiple devices. You'd need to store an "on-device" status separately for each device, and that could be complex.

You are correct the state of the device is not stored. Kovid has given you the tools to implement this yourself with custom columns. Create a custom column connect the device, highlight all On Device books then use the edit metadata window to fill in the custom column with On Device and your good to go.

I guess Ill just do it myself. Its trivial if you have one device. For multiple devices it should be simple. I guess the only question is whether or not there is a simple way to uniquely identify the device.

Use a Tag type column.
search: ondevice:true, select all
Bulk metadata edit: add (your tag field) <device name>
End edit
search: ondevice:false and formats:true
select all
Bulk metadata edit: Remove (your tag field) <device name>
End edit

Could you create a custom list using Kiwidude's "Reading List" plugin that would keep track of what books are on the device?

I'm not at all sure you even want to look at modifying the database OUTSIDE of Calibre!

Discussions on custom columns are related to columns made within the Calibre preferences; not via an external GUI.
