Amigo ?
Just had an email from ebooks.com telling me they've just released Amigo Reader, no software required.
Anyone else know of this, and if it's any good/helpful/better than any other etc..? I don't recall buying anything from them, but could well have registered early on in my journey into digitalis......... They do seem, well, not the cheapest source, maybe that's the books they have in history, my main "reference book" interest. |

An obvious scam. No legitimate company emails someone out of the blue without explicitly having a relationship with the person in the past.

I won't address the issue of ebooks.com emailing you out of the blue, but Amigo online reader is legit. http://www.ebooks.com/help/read-online/
Read Online eBooks.com sells books in several formats. One of them is an online format - meaning you read the book online. The others are download formats, which you can store on your computer or hand-held device. Online Read your ebooks online from any internet-connected device. To display the contents of your ebooks online, we use a browser-based ebook reader called Amigo Reader. You don't need to download any software in order to use Amigo Reader because the reader allows your books to just open up inside the same browser you use to surf the web. It is compatible with all popular browsers including Internet Explorer and Firefox. This reader can be used on any computer with an Internet connection, anywhere in the world. Amigo Reader is unique to eBooks.com, and we were the first online bookstore to allow our readers to read entire books online. Not all of our ebooks are available in Amigo Reader, because some publishers have yet to sign on to the program. For books that are available to read online, you'll see a flag that says "Available to read online in Amigo Reader". Amigo Reader books do not have to be purchased separately, and when available you will have access to the Amigo Reader version with the purchase of books that show a read online option. Download Download the whole ebook and read offline You can download a complete copy of every ebook you buy from us. There are several download software platforms to choose from, depending on what kind of machine you want to read on. |

MmavisO, Amigo kind of sounds like Google Editions. I haven't heard of it before, thanks for sharing.

ebooks.com is a legitimate site. I find that they have an excellent selection of academic books that I can't find digitally elsewhere. Amigo Reader has been around since last summer. Maybe it was only for US before and that's why you just got the email? You probably bought something there before or created an account and that's why they sent you email. When you look at your account library each book has two columns: one for download and one for read online with Amigo Reader. The online option is not available for most of my books.
ebooks.com has a partnership with Cambridge University Press. I wonder if the expensive books that you see in the history category are by Cambridge University Press. They tend to be quite a bit more expensive than mainstream publishers. |

It was just the Amigo I was curious about, not the site so much. I didn't mean to cast a shadow, so sorry for that ![]() But thanks for the clarification - I shall have a proper trawl through your shelves now, particularly for archeaology tomes ![]() |
