Thumbnails why?

Why is it we have totally useless thumbnail images of whatever the cover image is? What good does it serve other then bloat? It's even sometimes in the guide so it can become a menu item for Mobipocket.

I don't know. That is one thing I kind of like about my Kindle3. Just title & author. Though some people do like finding their books by image. I would like to hide those images on my Sony 350. Especially when I'm done reading them.

Don't you like bookcovers?

Personally I like having my bookcovers on my Nook. Even add them in if the book just has a title page.

Because seeing the cover helps me remember the book more than just a title and author.

I do like the thumbnails because I like looking at book covers. I just don't need them on my front page all the time. When I'm done with them I would like to be able to remove them. Sony has collections & you can move your books to them, but the thumbnails still stay on the front page unless you delete the books.

With my Kindle it is just title & author (which I also like) but when I'm done I can move it to my collections & they are no longer on my front page.

Sometimes I like bookcovers and sometimes I don't.

They are definitely an interpretation of the work that instills a preconception of the text in your mind before you have even had a chance to read the text. Maybe we should place bookcovers in the middle of the book?

Agreed -- helps me to decide on what to read next when a list does nothing to alleviate the indecision.

I would never buy a pb that didn't have a cover, so why shouldn't my ebooks have covers as well?

Heck, I've even put the generic Calibre covers on all of my fanfic stories.

An option to display them or not would be nice. I normally like to see them, as I identify books better by cover than by title, but there are times when I would like to quickly scan a title or author list.

Pretty sure you can hide the thumbnails on the 350. I don't have one with me so I can't say how but I did it on my roommates PRS 350 when she got it.

jgaiser got it wrong about the cover and everyone after that seems to have jumped on the cover bandwagon. It's not about the cover. It's bout the thumbnail image. This is just a really tiny image of whatever the cover image is. I've found no reason for the thumbnail image to be inside the eBook. ADE generates the cover view image from the cover image. Mobipocket Reader does the same thing. So the thumbnail image is NOT used to generate the cover image for cover view.

So what reason is there to have this thumbnail image? All it does it take up space. And in some cases it's also specified to be used int he spine so if the ePub is converted to Mobipocket, you have a link tot he thumbnail image. But you also have the cover.

So given that the thumbnail is not used for the cover image in cover view, what is it for?

Now I am really confused. Where inside the book is the tiny thumbnail and how did it get there? Is it in all epubs?

Probably common knowledge, but I have not come across it.

Thanks

You might not see it as it's not displayed in most ePub. But in some ePub, it's in the spine so it ends up as a menu entry for Mobipocket.
