HELP - problem with our ebook

I do not understand this issue a customer is having with one of our ebooks... The book is "25 bridge conventions you should know Part 1: Learn these first".

I downloaded the sample for the "Kindle for PC" application, and this is what I see:

But the customer sees something completely different:

Both of us are reading the exact same book and using the exact same software application.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might cause this odd behavior? I sent him the symbol.ttf file just in case he didn't have it on his computer (unlikely) but he had the exact same file on his computer. The only difference I could see was our operating system -- he was on Windows Vista, and we are on Windows 7. But why would that have anything to do with whether or not the book works properly in the Kindle for PC application?

Can anyone help to explain what might be happening here?

Looks like he is using a different (possibly older) version of Kindle for PC.

For what it's worth, I see the same thing you do (the first link), when I download the sample and view it with Kindle for PC v1.4.1 on Windows Vista.

Is it possible that their installation of K4PC is just dorked in some way?

No -- the issue is bigger than I thought...

I BOUGHT the book, and then the book that I purchased looked exactly like HIS screenshot -- all of the suit symbols did not work in the purchased product.

Furthermore -- I ran a test on a couple of other books as well -- I looked at the sample file, looked perfect. I BOUGHT the book, and the full-version of the book had the suit symbols show up as boxes.

I'm completely stumped. Is there a problem with my file? (But then how do the samples work correctly?). I have no idea what needs to be done to get the full book to look as good as the samples do. Kindle themselves made the sample files, I had nothing to do with that.
