I need a good reader ONLY for manga...
Hello.
I read manga with my desktop pc, my screen is 24'' and its really painful for my eyes + i have glasses. I need a good device for reading manga, but not too small. I also dont want it to strain my eyes... I dont want it to be too expensive, because like i said, i need it only for manga... any other functions in it will be useless for me... Thank you. ![]() |

An iPad or some other 10" tablet is the best choice by far, if it's within your budget. You can pick up bargains with the iPad 1 these days.

Since the manga generally are in black and white, I recommend to you the Kindle DX Graphite. The Pearl screen with 50% more contrast is going to show images very good using the Picture Viewer feature of the device. Also, you may consider the Onyx Boox M90, although there were some hardware problems that I don't know if were resolved.
The bottom line is that you need a 9.7" Pearl screen. |

Ah, but the other thing you want to do is quickly zoom in and out to read text that's too small to read on a full page view, and for that you want the instant response of the LCD screen.

+1. Hmm, the HP TouchPad might be worth considering if you can get one at fire sale prices. Although I have no idea if there are any manga reading apps available for it, no doubt sooner or later, Android will be ported to it.

Yeah, but he wants something not to strain his eyes. And the zooming is possible with the Onyx (I think) and always there is the option of reading in landscape mode.

ARGH. I dont know what to do, i dont have an insane amount of money... the only thing i can really buy is the Kindle 3 (the smaller one, i think its 6'', and the Nook, which is also 6'').

Manga is useless on the Kindle 3. I've tried, it looks nice, but text is virtually unreadable, and zooming is a pain. I'd say go with a cheap $200 tablet if you can find one.

I've been reading comic books on my Nook Color (CM7 with Perfect Viewer) and it's pretty amazing.
The Nook is smaller than an iPad, but the screen is a thing of beauty. Reading in landscape mode is easy and works quite well. |

I second this notion.
Reduced eye strain becomes more apparent when it comes to reading manga on Pearl e-ink screens VS constant glare from LCD screens. 6" screen is not suitable for reading manga as constant zoom/pan is required due to a smaller screen resolution of 800x600. This will ultimately affect the overall reading experience. If price is a major concern, you might wish to wait till end of December for discounted prices and start browsing at various websites for incoming sales promotions. |

"Glare" indicates that you have the screen brightness turned up too high. If you have the screen brightness set to match the light level in the room, then the light emitted from an LCD screen will be the same as that reflected from an eInk screen.

Hi Harry, thanks for the comment. I can't recall the exact term for eye fatigue and substituted another word for it. "Backlit" should be the right term but it seems to be unrecognized in google dictionaries, so i avoided using it.

I am reading Manga on my Kindle DXG (last generation with Pearl screen) I would strongly advertise it. I preprocess the images with canti first and then upload them to my kindle.
So far i haven't ever needed the zoom to read a word. I used to read my manga on my laptop before, but with pearl e-ink screen i never have the eye fatigue. The difference is day and night between an e-ink screen vs lcd screen. Even if you don't buy kindle dxg i advise a device with 9.7 inch screen with the latest eink technology (pearl) |

Sorry, what I meant was that if the brightness of an LCD screen is set correctly, there's no difference in its appearance (as far as the amount of light reaching your eyes) to using an eInk screen, and really no reason at all that it should cause eyestrain. Most people have the brightness of LCD screens set far too high - that's like looking into a flashlight.
