What is 8.15 doing?

Upgraded my XP Calibre.

Enabled Languages Column.
Bulk edited (2689 titles) and set Language to English: OK
Screen returned: White rectangle for some time., Finally painted.
Click on any menu choice: Not responding then clears that status but Menu does not open
No obvious Disk activity.
Process explores Calibre cycles between 50 and 1 (P4 Hyper thread enabled) about once a minute.
When this stopped, I finally could check: Backup status 2193 books to be written
(1.5G RAM P4-3.2)

Its writing the backups of the metadata for all the books you just set language for. The write happens at 3 books per second, which should not be enough to slow down the rest of calibre normally.

And let me note that there is no need to set the language, unless you actually have books with different languages in your calibre library. By default, calibre assumes all books are in the same language as the language you choose for calibre itself.

Hmmm' Now that Calibre is responding. I saw lots of steady I/O activity in Process explored., but did not see the Disk LED blink (OPF files are small enough that it might not show, even at 3 per Sec).
Calibre is fin now, but it was definitely on it's knees before.

Hmm, any reason why IO would be particularly slow on your machine? I tried doing a bulk set of 300 books and I noticed no slowdown while the backup was happening.

No Known reason (but I have been wondering Calibre book list GUI takes 15+ seconds to come out of sleep on a Restore from minimized) . This is a Dell Dimension with a 800MHz FSB (std was 400), and other thing get pokey, as well). Process explores shows nothing unusual going on.
