Kindle ranked 52 of the 101 gadgets that changed the world.
Last night I was watching the History Channel who did a special on the top 101 gadgets that changed the World. (The list was compiled by Popular Mechanics--PM)
Funny thing is the TV only mentions the Kindle and shows the Kindle3. The PM article is more accurate on the first eReader, but still gives credit to the Kindle creating the industry. At number 52 sat the Kindle. (Link) Link to the article (more...) The number one was the: Spoiler:
I'm a bit disappointed I've always felt the beer hat was number one. ![]() Last edited by =X=; 08-25-2011 at 02:32 PM. Reason: Updated comment |

Pres. Obama and his wife were having a discussion about the world's greatest invention. The President took the position that fire was the greatest invention, because so much in modern society is all predicated on the invention of fire. The cooking of meals, heating of homes, the combustion engine, modern automobiles, airplanes, and rockets that have allowed us to travel to the moon and explore the universe all flow from the original invention of fire.
Mrs. Obama disagreed strongly. She said that fire was just a discovery and not an invention at all. She believed that the greatest invention was the telephone. More specifically, she believed that the use of electronics in communication was the world's greatest invention. This may have started with the phone, but the basic concept would later lead to radio, television, computers, the internet and an entire world connected to one another through electronic communication. The phone was the greatest invention. About this time VP Biden walked into the office and heard their discussion, and then he said, "I think it's the thermos. It keeps hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold. How does it know? How does it know?" |

I think the rubber or condom should have been #1, but it didn't even make their list.

Interesting how the Kindle, Roomba, Gameboy, are the actual brands mentioned, as opposed to categories (eBook readers, personal robots, handheld game consoles).

I wanted a Roomba.
Then I heard the story about how a Roomba tracked doggie mess all over the carpet while on an automated cycle. I don't want a Roomba anymore. |

@Daithi Good one I'll remember this joke.
Sometimes I wonder who creates these list. There are many more inventions that had an impact. Quote:
@kjk yeah I mention that in my second paragraph on post 1. I wonder if they are trying to get more eyeballs on their list by listing known name brands. Or if they are listing market leaders that carved out an industry. =X= |

And do you have the print magazine issue? Perfect example of the difference between print and web for a list like that-both have ads interspersed, but the print one is (for me) much easier to browse ![]() |

I came across the list from watching a TV special last night, but I fell asleep after the tape recorder ranking. So I Googled it this morning to see if I could find the list. The web site is painful having to click next for each gadget is a sure way to keep anybody from returning to their site. =X= |

PM's site is horrible. And it makes no sense that I can't navigate the pages with flash disabled.
Still, interesting list. |

I couldn't get to the web list because I keep javascript off, but a properly done list on the web would be far easier to browse than a print list.
