bulk metadata gotcha

I was preparing to make a number of changes via edit bulk metadata to a group of books. First, the title also contained the series and series_index. I sent to the search and replace tab to begin the process of moving the series_index and before I completed it, I thought I should go back to the basic metadata tab and place the series name in first. It appears that when I clicked apply both tabs ran and it messed up my titles.
I post this just because this was unexpected behavior (I thought only the visible tab would run) and I saw no indication that there would be changes generated from both. As someone who changes gears routinely during a project I guess I'll just have to be more careful...or am i missing a setting/indicator that will warn people like me before we click apply? Also, is there a setting to keep fields filled in after hitting apply? The pull-downs speed up the process but not as fast as being able to just change what was in the field beforehand.

That is the way all dialogs work in calibre. All tabs are "applied" when you click OK. For example: The conversion dialog, the edit metadata single dialog, the create catalog dialog. Generally speaking, that is the way dialogs in most software applications work. When the OK/Cancel controls are below the tabs (not in an individual tab) they apply to all tabs.

Thanks for the explanation Kovid.
It would be nice if tabs that have actions to be taken would perhaps have their titles bolded or another similar indication that something other than what you are looking at will also be applied when the next/ok button is pushed.
