What device is this? Any opinions?
My sister is considering buying one of these for her kids.
Ebay Link Now it isn't an e-ink screen obviously (being colour), and it doesn't seem to support EPUB format. However it is cheap. Can anyone identify some sort of model so I could dig up some threads about it to find out what people have to say? Reading childrens books (nephews are 5 and 8) with pictures seems like a good idea to be on a colour screen. This "might" fit the bill. But I don't know how easily it would integrate with Calibre (known device or must you use save to disc), what format it is best to export onto for it, are PDFs reflowable on it etc. Many thanks for your input. |

It's a cheap, low build quality, Chinese no-name tablet with very poor specs, very poor battery life, unknown processor and speed, unknown memory, and probably a resistive touch display running an obsolete version of Android with no access to Android Market.
Personally, I'd stay away from it. Chances are, the device won't last a year and I bet the battery completely gives out in even less time. Cheap, low quality components = cheap price. |

It's not a dedicated e-reader for a start, looks like an old PDA.

I have great faith in the chineese ability to copy any device at all, create a duplicate at a lower price then the origingal and sell that copy back at a fraction of the cost of the original. However, that said this is not equal amoung all chineese groups and depends a lot on which device the chineese have selected to copy. One of two things are going on here: either you have run into a group of chineese that are a bit more hamfisted then the average chineese hardware makers are or they are not hamfisted its just that they have selected an outdated model to copy.
If you would like to buy a chineese made device make sure you get one that is a copy of a current model. I have seen chineese copies of the Kindle and Kobo electronic readers. Both readers typically sell for $50 USD and are identical to their US versions. You also need to be creful of the importer, the company that was importing these devices to the US was not paid one cent until their customer: 1) recieved the product and 2) was satisfied that the device worked. The second is called exceptance testing and you should insist on it |

Thanks everyone, sounds a non-starter then. Input was much appreciated. I would not consider buying it myself (you can see I own a Kindle & iPad 2) but as something cheap for the kids it was worth asking the question. Back to the drawing board of choices I guess, and I know they will end up delegating that task to me too.
If anyone else here has any suggestions (they live in Australia which might constrain the options a bit) feel free. iPads are not even remotely an option, and the Kindle being B&W plus poor PDF support (which most kids books are) isn't either. It is just to hopefully encourage the 5/8yr old kids to read more books, so I would rather it didn't have games, internet etc "stuff" on it. |
